I would go with number 2.

Number 2 for font size is nice.

Historically, ATI tends to have more problems with Lightwave.

Also, if you plan to use 3D Coat, only the nvidia one would offer cuda accekleration.

Even with no LightWave, I would always pick nVidia. I build machines as part of a repair business, and will sometimes get a mobo with an ATI GPU on it to save costs for the customer. I often see "quirks" about the way ATI works that drive me batsh1t.

ATI is more of a gaming card, unless you want to get a FireGL...

But, anything by Nvidia is even more of a gaming card than anything by ATI... and it's also a far better choice for 3D apps than anything so far by ATI. :D

But for Lightwave only, you could do just as well with a GeForce 6600 and up, since LW's OpenGL hasn't been updated since around 1962 or so, and I wonder at times if it's even accessing the video card at all. ;)

nvidia every time

I had and HD4850, and it did not work relaiably with 9.6. I had to change to a Nvidea card. Far more reliable.

ok ok that might have been a little too much

I recently tried an ATI card in my old machine and Lightwave kept having tearing and triangles in the viewport. Luckily I fixed my Nvidia card with a new fan and all the problems were gone. See pics.

I will only buy Nvidia cards in future. Most people buying the ATI cards only play games with them and will not notice problems with applications.

What is it with the large text, my eyes are failing with age but they are no that bad.

The red text makes the problem worse!

I’ve got a 8600, 9500, 9800, GTX280 & have ordered a GTX260 for the new box. If you are not pushing too many polys around any card is fine, I have no problem with a 8600. But if you are doing 10s of millions of polys then you need the best card you can afford.

If later on you are going to run LW via rendering nodes on other computers you don’t need any card.
