Why not update LightWave's flare-painter to create streaks and flares based on surface specularity in a frame? It's high time we had the ability to make coins and water sparkle, or car-wax gleam in the sun without jumping through hoops... ;)

You can do twinkles etc. already with Corona. Everything else may be a good idea, but I'm not really sure about that. Lens Flares in CG are more a means of artistic expression rather than simulating real world effects. Also once more LW's flares are ok for most stuff but lack the quality of my beloved Knoll Light Factory so for me this would be no option at all ;) . From a technical point I think you would also need to take the incidence angles and colors of the lights creating the specular reflection into account (with full HDR, not just the calculated shading).
