    Animeeple shutting down

Bad news everyone. Animeeple is closing up shop. Here's the email I just got.

    Hi all,

We have some bad news. We are shutting Animeeple down. Animeeple as a business has not been as successful as we had hoped. Thank you for your support and encouragement. We've enjoyed working with you.

We will keep the Animeeple servers online until January 31st, 2012. You can download content and use the Animeeple software until then.

If you bought the FBX exporter and need it after January 31st, please contact us at contact@animeeple.com.

I was hoping maybe they could make changes to the software so that it could be used without the online component and sell it for a small price instead of it being free. It'd be a real shame to see something like this disappear.

Yeah, I've kind of been worried for a while, it'd be a shame for the Animeeple tool to die off (their "razor"). Unfortunately, their pricing for motions always seemed a bit high (their "blades"). Without the blades generating serious revenue it seemed unlikely they could really afford investing in design of, manufacturing, or giving away razors for very long.

Honestly I've never seen anything for sale. The software was free and every character or motion I ever saw in their stores was also free. I didn't get it.

I downloaded the latest update and I did see one store that has motions for sale and one that had a single character for sale, all of the other stores are either empty or full of free stuff.

I'd always had the expectation that they'd start charging for the software once it was a bit more polished. Given that AD killed MoBu on OS X and also seem to gouge customers coming and going, there would seem to be space for an alternative.

Time to buy in a bargain basement rigger+ devs Newtek people?

and while you are at it TAFA (& devs) as well, Newtek people?

That would give the Char knockers a shock in LW 11 final

    now wouldn't it?

    That's too bad.
Maybe leslie is interested to work for newtek and make a base biped retargetting system. Wonder where animeeple guys will move on to.

Hmm, I only really looked rather early on, noted the prices, and while I thought the software had promise, wasn't thrilled at the motion pricing. It's entirely possible I saw "test prices" or something, but either way, it didn't really encourage me to keep a close eye on their store.

With tools like IPI's system becoming so affordable, the whole motion capture market is changing rather quickly. It's becoming quite feasible for even hobbyists to set up to capture their own motions, which is definitely impacting the value of existing libraries of pre-captured basic- and intermediate-complexity motions. Presumably they just found themselves on the wrong side of the market changes and the generally-poor economic conditions.

In any case, the software showed promise, so I have no doubt their devs will find work elsewhere. Still, it's heartbreaking to put so much hard work into something only for it to not work out, so I wish them the best of luck!

The only motions I saw were all $15 each I believe. I myself was using my Kinect to capture motions and Animeeple to work with them. It's great since it was free but the software is so handy I'd be willing to pay a reasonable price for that. I mean, what other option is there?
