    My opinion.

    1) LW needs a new file format.
    2) It will load old files, but they will need tweaking to suit the new renderer/surfacing/cameras etc.
    3) The new format will not be backwards...

The first thing I would do is add many more divisions to your box. My rule of thumb is that poly's in the, (in your case), box object should be spaced apart about half the size of the coins. I also,...

Indeed. The main plugin I use with LW ATM is Houdini.

Again indeed. The fact that plugin devs still have the devotion to spend time making things for a dead, (for now) LW shows the strength of...

Something like the title sequence to my tutorials? For that, there is no ground plane as such, just geometry.

For this, I'd create a block as big as required for the shot, and about 5-10cm thick....

This one took a bit longer, but still uses a point light on a plane to generate a (hidden from camera), shadow map, then the raytrace node projects that on the geo. Would be easier in LW12 as you...

Indeed, it's not perfect, it uses a texture rather than geometry as it was just a quick test. But it produces a result that could be comp-ed in if the OP was in a rush to get things done. I may...

You could try setting the toroid to be lit only by a point light situated at your dipole, (that is set to only illuminate the toroid), then when it passes the dish it will be shadowed and disappear.

Cyclops, you're correct, there is no current equivalent for LW. There are ways around it, I'd do something with 2 point polys and a nodal network with nulls as controllers, then you could save it...

I love Houdini's method where you can "promote" any variable in the node network to become a live controller. That would be an interesting way to go.

I can't think of anything that would give you that kind of "volumetric" output on a scale you can use. However IFW2 is probably they way forward, do you have an example of the look you're after?
