View Full Version : How to resolve any and all issues with LW and OSX

We just came up with a wonderful idea over a couple of beers @ happy hour with my co-workers.
Funny how beer helps with ideas. :)
Anyway, I was telling them about all the stuff I've encountered with LW and OSX and you know what they suggested should be done?
They suggested that the people at NewTek who are responsible for promoting LightWave should really embrace the Mac and start demoing and using it.
So I am publicly suggesting that NewTek get Proton on a PowerBook to run LightWave on so he can know what we are experiencing.
The PowerBook can replace his Dell Laptop as his travel laptop of choice.
Do this and you will know why we act the way we do on LightWave under OSX NewTek.
Hell...while you're at it...get Deuce a new G5 and the developers some new G5's as well. They need to understand first hand the frustration we feel on OSX using LightWave...and the bliss we feel using OSX (the experience is fantastic).
It's time that the Mac take a front seat at NewTek since the PC has been riding in that seat for so long.
Anyway...have a great weekend everyone.

Getting everyone on a new machine isn't going to have them share our pain. Get them on a current stock machine (like a dual 1.25GHz with an ATI Radeon 9000 card), not the latest and greatest hardware. They should have a G5 around for development of LW[8], especially when it comes time to optimize for the G5 system, but my pain has little to do with the state of the art system. My system is at least 1.5 years old...

But then he would miss out on all those Newtek promotional videos, like at Siggraph.

bu that isn't an elephant...it's a tree trunk*.

They prefer Boxx... Even though I have seen not one boxx system in many LW studios, I see far more mac LW setups instead.

Ade, actually we work to maintain good relationships with a number of platform manufacturers. That does not mean that we prefer one over the other. Any appearance that there might be would be due to one or the other partnering with us to provide systems for our show use from time to time, and most shows more than one manfacturer provides systems.
Michael, we are using systems such as you describe and for that matter a number of older; adding to our spread with some of the more current systems would be a good idea - so of course we are working it.
Poli: the developers are working with OSX systems, and do have first hand experience with how LW operates on OSX. But more systems will certainly be merrier, and we very much do want to address any and all issues that may be frustrating users. People tend to look at the overall market numbers for platforms, and fail to realize that Mac is very strong among digital content creators - that is not the case here. We understand the strength and the opportunity represented by the incredible advances on the platform - OSX and now the incredible G5s.
So, in sum, great suggestion, and by all means I hope you and other Mac users will continue to show enthusiasm and support for your suggestions here and continue to urge us forward on our efforts on the Mac.

Awesome Chcuk.
As always, thank you for the inisight.
I just want the best for LightWave...and the best for OSX using LightWave.
Sorry if anything came out the wrong way. I think you guys are doing a great job and I just want to make everyone is aware of your dedication to LightWave and the platforms.
By all accounts, the Siggraph demos show that you guys are doing some great things. Keep it up!
I anxiously await LightWave 8...I know we are going to love it!!!

lip service. Let's all smile and say each other's great and we all respect each other's efforts and blah blah blah.
Words, smiles, promises = vapor.
I want proof of action and results, which I probably won't see until [8] at the earliest. With that said, all this witty repartee is just for entertainment purposes until then.

Chuck - if/when NewTek has G5 development units, could you post 'official' LW benchmarks, so we can finally tell if they're any good for LW or not?
(And hopefully quieten some of the busy PC folk who have been swarming over this forum recently...)
Also, some guidance as to potential optimisation (a la Maxon) would make interesting reading.

well...the fact that the right plug-ins are getting ported by 3rd party developers to OSX is good enough news to me.
I just want Apple and ATI to fix their bug on my Laptop...and I think knowing that NewTek has contacted Apple and ATI is a good thing. It means that the lines of communication are open.
In all honesty...this bug is one of the biggest issues concerning LightWave under OSX...everything else so far has been been pretty nice from the perspective of experience using LW under OSX...
Hopefully Panther will address this poor driver issue which has given so many of us grief.
Does anyone know who we can contact at ATI and Apple to make the situation more apparent?

he he...
Time to get real, I guess....
I'd still like to see a link at the Apple site that refers to LW as a solution for 3D. I'd also like it more publically known that the 7.5c download is basically the discovery edition. I'd also like to see LW featured in apple machines in the apple store as Adobe's software is featured.
I'm not sure why this hasn't happened.....

The link is there, buried deep in Apple's website. Click on the address below, and you'll see a link to Lightwave on the right hand side of the page...
http://www.apple.com/macosx/applications/
Click on where it says Lightwave and you'll see a very old page promoting Lightwave 6.
I notice the axed application Bryce is on the same page.

We've submitted replacement material for that page a number of times. So far no change.

I'd buy that Apple is a bit behind on promoting and supporting Lightwave -- nothing against the app (which I own and love) but since Steve J. and Pixar utilize Maya in addition to their proprietary stuff, I could see someone at Apple trying (subtly) to keep Mac 3D focused on Maya, as wrong as that is.
Chuck, do you have someone at Apple you can call to hound, either via the developers center or marketing? I'm sure you've already explored these options, but doesn't hurt to ask, right?
