I thought I'd mess around with the new VT3 function of being able to use firewire inputs on the switcher. Looking through the various video sources on the switcher inputs, I don't see anything regarding a DV camera or firewire input.
I'm using a Canon XL1s, Dell Precision 530 with WinXP. When connected to the built-in firewire port, I see the camera listed under My Computer. But I don't see where I can use it in VT3.
Maybe the onboard firewire port is the culprit, not being compatable with VT3? Any ideas?
Do you have Direct X 9.1b installed if not, try upgrading that.

Right-click on one of the Switcher inputs ( for example C1). You should get a popup menu that will allow you to select your DV device as the source. You will then see that Switcher input relabed to DV.

DirectX 9.1? At the Microsoft downloads site it only mentions DirectX 9.0. Where can you find 9.1?

John, that's what I do, right-click on a switcher input, but I see no DV device to choose. I see all of the other types of inputs, but no DV device. I'll make sure I have the latest DirectX installed, which I think I do, but I don't think that will fix it.

The camera has to be plugged in and turned on. Make sure it hasn't timed out and turned itself off.

Um, yeah, I figured it needed to be on and plugged in. It is. Like I said, with it turned on and plugged in, XP recognizes that I have a DV camera plugged into the integrated firewire port. I just don't see an option to use it as an input on the switcher.

Had this happen two days ago and we simply shut down both the camera and the switcher module and then restart both the camera, (and pressed play on the camera), and then the switcher module. DV showed up automatically upon restart.

Sweet. Maybe a combination of things, but I did upgrade to Direct9.0b and now the DV shows up as an input. Cool, thanks.
On a side note, I think the composite and Y/C connections look a bit warmer than the DV interface. The DV input looks nearly stale.

Actually, DV is probably closer to being the true color of the video ... When we import DV we decode it directly in YUV, meaning that there is no color conversion being applied at any stage of the processing chain. Indeed, if you had an SDI output, your VT would be simply acting as a digital DV->SDI convertor without applying any modification to the signal.
All that said, I have often found that Y/C introduces a certain 'smooth' look to video that can make it more visually appealing than some of the artifacts that DV has.
If you still think that there is something wrong, given the above, feel free to drop me an email with some images to look at, and I will see if there is something that is wrong.
