I am using SE 1.5.5 on a Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit Core 2 Quad machine.

I am able to edit video with no issues but when I start messing with sound and bringing in different audio formats SE will lock up on my almost every time.

I only run SE on this machine and it's been happening since purchase. I always figured it was Vista and was ready to convert to XP when I read all the threads that say SE works with Vista.

Anyone have suggestions on how to stop SE from locking up when I start working with my audio tracks?

Help Please!

What types of files are these? What's the codec also?

We have been on Vista 64 for a long time and haven't had this issue.
There are some MP3 files that cause slowdowns. I guess there are multiple MP3 file types and some play better than others.

We are using MP3 files and have tried a couple of different codecs. How do I determine what type of MP3 file we have?

I wish I could tell you. We always try and use .wav files but on ocassion have to use mp3's. Out of a few dozen mp3's we've had to use I think only one gave us any slow-downs.

After having replaced my Q6700 based motherboard, due to constant sluggishness within the SpeedEDIT-VT timeline, then experiencing the same thing with the new motherboard, I finally hunkered down and went to the motherboard website, and downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the chipset, including those that have to do with the onboard SATA controller.

That said, I heartily suggest you check to see if new drivers for your system (i.e., the chipset drivers, and those for the SATA storage controller). If you go this route, after downloading, please do this: read the documentation *carefully*, and follow through accordingly, when installing those updates.

You just might find a smoother experience with SpeedEDIT in Vista Ultimate 64, as I am finally, enjoying in my VT[5] suite, after many months of suffering sluggishness, on yet, another Core2 Quad motherboard.

I've been using Vista since it was released and there are no Vista specific issues that I am aware of.

The most common audio problem has to do with 3rd party codecs that replace the Microsoft mp3 codec as the default.

FFDshow, which is included in almost every codec pack these days will often interfere with applications. It has enough problems that in newer versions they have started white-listing (not black-listing) applications it will allow itself to be used by.

The easiest way to check is to download Sherlock - The Codec Detective
http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html
and
Gspot - codec information appliance
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

You can use Gspot to tell you exactly which codecs you are using on each file.

Sherlock will tell you what is installed and if any seem to be incorrectly installed.

FFMpeg installs an application that can disable some or all of it's codecs. Alternatively you could just uninstall the offending codec.

Be sure to reboot and retest after making changes, many uninstallers just remove themselves from the start menu or installed list and leave their codecs behind.
