Getting text (other than US) as geometry into LightWave?

I can live with the fact that I have to manually add Ä Ö and Ü -points to text created within Lighwave. But when it comes to Arabic, Hebrew or just simple Turkish, I'm lost. I tried to create an EPS-File with Open Office Draw but LW imported nothing.

I can type جهنم into the input field. But all I get upon activate is: ????

Notpad can do it.

Even trueSpace 1.0 for Windows 3.1 does it half way. (Writes from left to right and doesn't connect them.)

Make sure your EPS version is low enough. I haven't tried saving EPS from OOo Draw, but it may be that it's saving as PDF - like later Illustrator versions and LightWave can't work with those. The other thing you can do is convert the text to curves if Draw allows, that way you are just dealing with shapes like any other vector shapes, but that still means you need to watch EPS versions.

Also make sure your save the eps to file version 8 or older.

Found the Convert to Curves/Polygons option but no luck with it. There is also no option for a format version.

Perhaps there is a methode to convert EPS to DXF? Hm..... or save it as DXF in the first place.

If its a one off-bung the eps over and il convert it to a usable file for you.

Make sure the type is curves though

You need to convert to curves in the drawing application, not in LW. You can do this in illustrator. Otherwise your EPS file just contains Font and size/scale info - not actual outline artwork which LW needs.

I did the conversion in OOd.

I'ts pre-production testing for non-profit education (countering the "works" of Harun Yahya and alike) . So (right now) purchasing something (expensive) like Illustrator is not an option.


I found a way (displacementmap that is 1 unit smaller) to trace a screengrab. But I can't smooth the contours.

(it's a LW 6.5b screen, but i got the the LW 9.3 trail and planning on purchasing)

I loaded up OOo Draw and did a test, but had no joy. It seems that OOo saves out a version 3 EPS, which should be fine, but Modeler doesn't want to know.

Interesting, If you can not find anybody with Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw, post the eps file and someone can convert it for you. If I have time I can, but there is no guarantee that it will convert. If modeler is having issues other programs may as well. At this point we don't know if the problem lays with Open Office Draw or Modeler.

I've tried to import into Corel Draw 4 (runs on dosbox ;) ) and it failed as well. But exporting something I wrote (left to right only) in Corel Draw 4 and importing into Modeller worked.

So it's Open Office Draw's fault.

This one worked half way (I guess) 3x jahannam (, each time in a different font. But the holes where not drilled.

Looks like I have to stick with high res textures and skip textmorphing.

Any chance this will be fixed in CORE or a possible 9.X update. I mean the numeric box can handle it. How much can be wrong on the way.... WAIT A MINUTE...

This is strange. "Make Logo" does a better job than "text". But still not the right thing. I does not connect the letters and you got to type (it fails to read an unicode text-file) backwards. And the Display within the input field is wrong ("Text" does ist right, even connecting the letters)

I mean isn't it kind of embarrassing that notepad can do it the proper way? And it's not just Arabic. It also fails on the first name of the actress that play Uhura in the new Star Trek Movie :hey:

U have an autodrill option when importing an eps. Sometimes however you just have to booleen them yourself.
