Animating transparency

Can anyone help me....?

I'm trying to create an animation that will gradually show the object from one end to the other (will give the impression of slowly growing).

Please help, its driving me mad...!

have had to do this sort of thing several times...

I usually render 2 passes of the animation, one with the object, and one with the object nort in the scene. Then, using the no object scene as a background image sequence, place a Front projection mapped flat plate in the scene, and "grow" it, by stretching, etc....

Make sure the fp plate id set at 100% luma and 0% diffuse to illiminate lighting issues. I usually use a transparency map on the plate to soften the edge.
