Ive been trying this for the last 2 days and I keep running into walls.
I have a 3 d letter wich I want the side surfaces to grow onto, Basically starting from the ground going up and around the curves(in this case a lowercase n) and connecting to the other side where they meet. Ive tried mormphs but they end up being to linear and dont follow the contour of the letter as they grow they simply start off small and increase in size over time rather than growing around the surface. So how is this done. Ive seen it in the movies on commercials. Ive heard that maya has something that will record as you build a model but does lightwave? otherwise how do I do this ?

Try using an animated boolean using this plugin...

http://www.shift.gr.jp/plugins/BooleanTexture.zip

You apply it as a procedural texture in the clip map area, to both your objects (the text, and say a covering box). Try looking at the examples...

have you tried having the sides as as seperate layers and using a clip map animating upwards to reveal them?

yeah the clip map thing seems to work the best, but there are just so many layers, I would think that there would be an easier way. basically the effect would be like the movie time machine when it shows the citys being built etc.

Try using the animated boolean.... You animate a block going up and uncovering the letter, and it's subtracted from the letter, as below...

DOH! It's intel only at the moment. You could ask the writer if he'd get it ported to the mac though.

You might also try asking this guy to help as he has a mac and pc, but I dunno whether he will... His name is David Ikeda and is a programmer...
