there, found a good robot rig, download the source file.

if you open up the model in Modeler, you can see that it has weightmaps applied for each moving part.
going into Layout you can see that these weightmaps have been used by the various bones.
simple and cool http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/smilies/smile.gif

Any general rigging and animation teaching will help you with robot rigging and animation. There's very little difference. The biggest difference is that robots are generally made up of rigid elements that do not get deformed by bones. So in this case the segmented bits that make up his body would be parented to bones.. As opposed to the bones being part of and deforming them. And they don't HAVE to be bones. All motion and IK tools are available to all items (bones, nulls, objects, lights, cameras). So your rig could be made up of a bunch of null objects if you wish.

Other than that.. You might get some helpful bits from my YouTube tutorial videos (http://www.carm3d.net/Media/Carm3DOnTheTube/Carm3DOnTheTube.htm). Good luck.

Something I was playing with earlier in the year. First vid is more fluid but I wasn't happy with the foot positions, second vid is a more refined model but I managed to improve (read utterly RUIN!) the walk cycle. Need to play with this again at some point.

Both are forward kinematics only.
