I posted this in tips and tricks as well. Wanted some feedback though.
I read up on prior posts concerning heat waves.
What I have in mind is the exhaust from a jet engine.
Here is something that was suggested as far as displacing surfaces with an animated noise on the refraction channel. Worked pretty well I thought. Less than 5 seconds a frame on my system.

I have a falloff using gradients so that there is not a line where the cone ends.
I will try doing a 3d particle system in LW and bring it over to AE for another test. This was suggested on DV Garage.
