Hi!
Everything rendered using Lightwave 64 bit 9.3 - 9.5 versions. Also used ZBrush and AfterEffects.

Video is here:
http://vimeo.com/3499638
But i dont know what causes little choppy playback in flash player, may be 30fps along with fast camera movements or some codec problem? For better quality please download zipped videofile here:
http://i-cg.ru/share/ei/ei720.zip
(File size 101Mb, resolution 1280x720, 30fps, h.264 codec)

Odd, for some reason even the .mp4 plays like crap on my MacBook Pro. I like the visuals, but it has a nasty stutter that makes it hard to watch.

I like the asteroid's fire! How did you make that?

I like the asteroid's fire! How did you make that?

I used 4 sets of particles in Lightwave. 1st - bombarding front part of outer collision surface. 2nd - emits when 1st die, then sticks to the second collision surface underneath outer one. This allows trail tips to follow rotation of the asteroid. 3rd - is small trails emiting from 2nd, which bounces from third even smaller collision object to avoid going through.
4th - vapour trail particles appears same way as 2nd but flyes along surface and behind. Every particle calculations done separately one after another.
For front part of flames i used clothFX sphere with distnce based gradient for surface settings.
Small trails(2nd set) - volume mode HyperVoxels.
Big vapour trail - sprites.
Everything rendered in separate passes with lots of AfterEffects blending and bluring.
Asteroid's luminosity also controlled by distance based gradient.
Everything rendered 1920x1080 using my home workstation with dual Xeon X5365 and 4 GB RAM.

If you need more information let me know.

I really do like it, but neither version will play smoothly on any of my machines. This includes a quad at work (with crappy onboard video), a MacBook Pro (with 4GB RAM), and my home PC (quad i7 with 12GB RAM and a GeForce 280)

I'm trying to fix it. I'm terribly not familiar with video encoding and under Vista 64 bit, i have problems with most of codecs. Also i'm working on enhancing motion blur in AfterEfects and may be i'll experiment with frame rate decreasing. I don't know exactly what to do with it so any suggestions appreciated.

Wow, I wish I did have advice regarding Vista - I've never had much luck with creating movies with Windows. I usually do my modeling/rendering on a Windows machine, then do my video production and music with a Mac.

Though I have to admit, Handbrake runs MUCH better over Vista than OS X. :)

nice video , animation is great , only concern is that the TV in the metor looks rather flat compared to your background , playback was fine 4 me , i reckon its the compression its causing the video the jump slighlty , what codec are you using ? i have some nice software that converts to practilly anything without giving you lossey , sometimes when export from one format to another the interlacing gets messed about , and when you re-render it cause playback diffuculties , i converted 170meg to 300k without lossing quility i used swf codec ohh cant remember ill look it up and post it for you , or if you like i download the zip and compress the video to another format

peace nice work

Thanks CG! The rest looks great to! Forgot to mention that in my earlier post ;)

OnlineRender, i used built in AfterEffects cs3 h.264 encoder. Just recently tested it with QuickTime player which for some reason hates my compression settings. Thanks for help you offered! Name of softwatre that you using should suffice for me, if you wish to recompress my video i'll be very much obliged to you but i feel awkward taking your time.

Thanks guys! If you need any information or "how to" i'll cheerfully share it. But i have some difficulties building sentences cause i practice English not frequently enough. Also i have lot of work this time so it may take a few days for me to post a reply.

Hello, I am rather new to 3D (started some 9 months ago with LW) and I like your earth very much. Especially the dark side with the lights. How did you do them? I am planning to make a complete earth which can turn from day to night, but I am not sure where to start and how to create the night side.

Plays perfect on my Intel Imac 24", running the latest versions of Quicktime and Leopard.
Good work, really loved the asteroid and the overall look of the video.

Use incidecne as input for gradient to control texture and luminosity between lit and dark side in node editor. I plan to improve my Earth using volumetric light for atmosphere like i used in approach/impact scenes but i did not tryed yet to fake night side with this technique.
