I'm an avad user of linux and i like the stability and speed of an optmized linux anyway i'm wondering if and when will NewTek relase Lightwave for linux, i think screamernet is out for linux but i ment the actual program like modeler, and layout.

According to former Lightwave programmer Arnie Cachelin, porting the renderer was relatively easy compared to the rest of the app.

It would take a considerable amount of resources to port the rest of Lightwave to Linux. There's also the issue of 3rd party plug-ins.

Not saying a full port is not worth it though. It would allow the Opteron to run in full 64-bit mode, rather than 32-bit. It would allow you to install more than 4gigs of RAM in AMD based machines.

I wonder if lightwave the app can't run in wine, it probably won't run as good as it would be running on a win32 platform but atleast i would have it running on linux.

I ran it in WINE on my Linux box. It only ran in Discovery mode, it didn't see my USB dongle. So I left it at that, just rebooted into Windows to use it.

hmm interesting, right now the only linux box i got running right now is my old 233, anyway in a week or two hopfully the last item will show up and that's my custom bult waterblock for my watercooled system. its going to dual boot window 2k pro and gentoo linux. anyway the spec on it.

2.8c hopfully overclocked to 3.2+ ghz

2x stick of 512 meg of ddr466 corsair XMS for total of 1 gig

Abit IC7-G

2x 10k western dightal raptor SATA drive, not as good as 15k SCSI drive but still 10k is better than the IDE 7.5k norm. my two raptor drive will be my OS drive, one will hold window 2k, the other will hold gentoo linux. they will also hold few apps such as lightwave etc...

2x 200 gig western dightal IDE drive for data storage and apps/games

modded lian-li 75 case, it was expensive case but it does look darn nice and is very easey to mod, i have already ripped out the top 4 bays to build in my little wind tunnel for my radator and pump, already got 2x 114 CFM pafinfo fan theyre a quite one, if they don't give enough cooling power i can stick in some more or i can replace em with delta 190 CFM.

liteon 52x32x52x cdrom burner
pionner 16x dvd player would had liked a dvd burner but going to wait for them to settle down on a format first or something plus still little expensive.

radeon 9700 pro, its for my games i like to play games, i would had loved to get my paws on some of those render card like the quandro or so but too expensive. so i settled for the radeon 9700, its focused on gameing but it will atleast still give an nice boost to open gl rendering.

hmm i think that's everything on my pc, its going to be an nice system, i even consdered going after dual athon MP system but couldn't find one with a good AGP silot because i still like to do some gaming so... :)

total cost was about $2,500 which i thought was pretty good, not an bleeding edge but pretty close :)

anyway i'm going to do some tweeking to my gentoo kernel and wine to see if i can't get it to work for lightwave but probably won't but it just depends i guess.
