We have a linear editing system that worked well with an old Video Toaster (Amiga/Toaster version 4.5). We decided to upgrade to the new VT2 full blown system.
This is what we're trying to do: We want to route our vtrs to our Sony SEG 2550 video switcher then route our program out to the SX8 box then out to our recorder vtr. (This is the way it worked with our old Toaster system). The problem is that we have an illegal reference warning when we try to edit. Also, the video signal is delayed with the audio. Video signal looks like it needs to be referenced. Works fine with old Toaster but does not work with new Toaster. Help!

The VT card has too much delay to set up as you propose. We have the optional Genlock card and have the VT feeding our digital production switcher and that works fine. If you must have your VTR's pass through the VT, patch them directly to it, as the built in dual TBC busses will syncro them fine then send your VT to you SEG (as long as you have the GenLock card) or REC deck (no GenLock needed - set VTR REF to Input).

Keep in mind your are going to delay through the VT card so pass you audio through it as well or you will have to add Audio Delay to sync it back up. Note: No Pre-reading possible using VT!

same problem here

solution:
We have to buy VT Genlock board
http://www.newtek.com/products/vt/info/genlock.html

Timing is everything in the studio environment, where every piece of equipment has to be in perfect step with every other in order to insure clean takes and transitions in live switching, editing and post production. The VT Genlock option is an optional daughter-card including these key features:

Daughter card attachment to VT[3]
Does not require additional PCI slot
Syncs VT to existing house sync.
Genlock loop-through available on SX-8

Genlock is only required to time VT to an existing sync pulse. Used in live field production, VT internally generates sync for all incoming signals, and only requires genlock if the VT switcher is connected upstream of another switcher.

The genlock option is available from any Authorized NewTek reseller for $595.
