We have upgraded our software form VT3 to VT5. And on VT3 to get the caption I need to make the video layer an overlay then put a render avi file from caption maker and I had caption. But in VT5 checking Overlay does not let the caption pass through it is covering it up. So I have to crop like 10 lines of the top of every video line to let the caption pass through. (Which gets old for an hour long program.)

My question is does anyone know how to fix this problem?

I have done my homework on this first. I search this form and called Newtek and did not find an answer. The lady on the phone thought I was talking about subtitles and suggested using the CG. Also if there is another form with more information could some one point me in the right direction? Thanks.

But in VT5 checking Overlay does not let the caption pass through it is covering it up.I'm not following, sorry. You put the rendered cc avi layer in the project, overlaying it on top of the main video clip - and what exactly is it that 'is covering it up'? By definition, an overlay appears above the other video, so this has me baffled. Maybe a screengrab of your project would help?

Robert Wilson is the guy to help here.
What cc software made the cc file?

I looked back at my notes for cc and my cc render did not have a alpha channel so I could just overlay.
The data was on the top 4 pixels on a 486 height clip.
If yours is the same, then adjust the crop of the cc clip to 484 on the bottom and enable overlay on it.
This cc clip with the crop on it ,should be the lowest clip on the time line with overlay enabled to lay over all other clips.

Now once this works for you and it should, select the cc clip and open tool shed.
Expand Presets and then hold down the shift key and select New and name your Preset Closed Caption.
Holding the shift key down makes a Preset of only control tree functions you worked on.

To test your new preset, remove the cc clip and then add it to the project again and enable overlay on it.
Now with the cc clip still selected, select your new closed caption preset and select preform and it should work perfectly.

This should make your work flow quite easy going forward.

PS This was from notes I had on using Cation Maker by CPC.

Take care,

if the closed caption file is an avi with the data contained in the vertical retrace area you put it on the timeline play and verify that the output of the vt to a CC enabledTV works.
The next step is to put your program avi on the time line, turn on overlay and crop the top of the pix so that the cc data can be seen.
This does work as I have done it many times here. The vt changes the overall height of the pix when overlay is turned on, putting the data into the wrong place. DO NOT use overlay on the cc file data avi.
However, if you are making a dvd then you have to enter a file into your authoring program. The file is called an .scc file. since dvd's strip all sync and work with sequential image sequences the cc data is inserted into the multiplex stream.
I hope this helps.

The cc data after verification will record properly to dv, dvcam, 3/4" and betacam along with other formats.
The VT is transparent to closed caption data .

Sorry for leaving out important information. I put the avi render of the caption on line 1 which I do not make an overlay and make everything else in front of it an overlay. VT3 seemed to crop enough on the overlayed videos in front of cc to let it pass through.

Joe I like the suggestion to put the cc avi file in front all other videos and crop everything but the top 4 lines. I will try this on next week’s broadcast. We use CPC CaptionMaker NLE version to get the cc avi file. Thanks for tip.

Pete, I was trying to avoid this step:

The next step is to put your program avi on the time line, turn on overlay and crop the top of the pix so that the cc data can be seen.

Because the program does not have too may layers to print without rendering. But croping all the layers gets old fast. Yes, I do render it to caption but I do it at a lower quality to move it across the network faster. Thanks for the help.
