hi there,

I know it doesn't look it yet, he he, but I've been working through Essential Lightwave v9 by Steve Warner, Kevin Phillips, and Timothy Albee.

Man, when you reach the end of chapter 7, they make you redo chapter 2-7, he he he. You wanna die, cause you wanna move on, but I did redo it, and then when doing chapter 8's video tutorial modelling a cordless phone, I was glad I had redone chapters 2-7.

I'm not meaning to plug this book, or maybe I am, he he, but being a beginner this is really really a great book so far.

this is what I came up with at the end of the phone modelling, I know there is a gazillion and one poly, shading and smoothing problems, and now after doing it, I understand why and how to fix them, but this is not a subpatch model, so to fix it is gonna be very very tedious.

anyways I thought I'd share,

thanks,
Derrick

Looks good.

Just FYI, if you're planning on doing 3D in any serious way, "very very tedious" is a phrase you should get well acquainted with. That you had the stamina and persistence to do the whole thing twice is a very good sign.

QFT. What the hell is wrong with people like us? :screwy:

OP: Essential 9 is awesome. This looks okay to me as modeling goes. There are some lumpy spots but if this is your first effort it's excellent. Maybe it's because I'm not as used to it, but modeling anything with straight polys (no SubD) except for the flattest straightest things always seem tedious to me. You spend just as much time rounding and beveling as you do adding geometry to sharpen SubD edges. I should look into SubD weighting again. Do they work better now in LW9? I was told by this crew to avoid them if possible in LW8.

he he he, yeah looks like "very very tedious" is going to play a more prominent role.

But it's really great learning Lightwave. taking my time though, sometimes something takes a bit of time to sink in, sometimes it quick.

thanks for responding, I appreciate it,

Derrick
