To all:

I have a co-worker that wants to see if it will be feasible to put the VT5 system on a 1U rack and thinks that everything else would be fine if the toaster would only use an integrated graphics solution.

I am totally against this and would like to upgrade the 4U chassis that we have.

I also understand that the GPU is not vital in the rendering or capturing of video.
On the side: I was still wondering if anybody knew of capturing live to a SAN using a Fiber channel network. This is another reason for going 1U.
I don't think it will work as well.

It's like driving a Smart Car when you are 7 feet tall, just because it will get you there just not as smoothly or comfortably as a more roomy model.

Your opinions are much needed.

Believe me I have tried sticking a VT card in just about everywhere. 1U are very VERY tricky. Yes is an answer to your question but most 1U cases will not have the room and cooling needed for the VT card along with everything else you need. The other big disadvantage of 1U computers is the fan noise. I have only had one 1U that was quiet enough to use without going nuts. It burnt up inside because their wasn't enough cooling happening.

I have successfully assembled VTs into 2U computers but they are also tricky. You have to have the righ riser card to complement the slot arrangement on the motherboard.

Fiber channel should work just fine. Are you looking to using the VT as a capture station for shared collaboration? or are you wanting a portable live production system?

Either way if you would like to save some time and money, give me a shout. I believe I even have one of the 2U cases in the back somewhere still in a new box.
