View Full Version : Super Cel Shader settings that often work out well

Someone asked in another thread if I could repost some of my favorite Super Cel Shader settings. The attached snapshot shows the settings I used for every celshaded surface on my most recent character, Lore (http://www.celshader.com/gallery/lore/).
I still plan to tweak his settings, but these are the settings I first try when celshading any character. I might lower the Brightness for Zone 1 and Zone 2 when handling non-skin surfaces, but I usually keep the Brightness of these Zones between 70-90%. For skin, I prefer shadows with a Brightness of 90%.
I hope these settings prove useful! :)

Can you make a comparison among Super Cel Shader, BESM Shader and Unreal Shader in functions?
I usually use Unreal Shader.

I usually use Unreal Shader.
Of the three, unReal gives you the most options; Super Cel Shader gives you the least options; BESM falls somewhere inbetween. I have not fully explored unReal yet, but it was the only celshader of the three that could deliver the transparent/reflective/refractive surface that I wanted for the water in my rose-drop (http://www.celshader.com/gallery/md/rosedrop.mov) animation.
Plus, the latest unReal beta lets you use weightmaps to control the hardness/softness of the paint transitions on a vertex-by-vertex basis for a given surface. I'm not 100% sure if I'd use this feature or not, but it's still one more option over the other two celshaders.
That said, unReal does not come with LightWave, so you can't use it with the Linux rendering node for ScreamerNet.
Any one of these shaders can help you create the illusion of a painted cel. 99% of the time I use Super Cel Shader, because it's faster to set up than BESM or unReal. I might look into one of the other two shaders soon, though, for their greater control over lighting.

Hope Celshader can deeply explore the other two cel shaders. I only touch the outer core of Unreal.
I like the rose-drop animation.
