Freestyle GFX competition entry for the Assembly 2003 event.. No results yet.
I was kinda cynical about the whole competition at first as it was a mixed cg/photo/whatever-you-do-with-whatever -contest, i.e. cg compositions such as this battling against some real good freehand stuff. There was even one crayon entry.
No proper pics of the other contestants yet, only screengrabs at http://www.mbnet.fi/jutut/assembly2003/kuvaloota/selaa.aspx?k=256&avainsana=grafiikkakompot - just click on the lil arrows if you don't understand finnish ;)

could you tell me what kind of plane this is? the fuselage structure, horizontal stab placement, and center mounted guns seem to indicate a messerschmitt 109
... but then it looks like there are remenats of RAF markings... interesting
Nice composition perhaps it would look better if stuff was generally bent up a bit more, and perhaps some mossy type things hanging off the wing might be a nice touch.
Either way, nice work!

just a dark idea but here goes:
what if you had a skeleton pilot in full uniform, a bullet hole in his cracked visor helmet hanging from a deployed parachute from a branch from a tree nearby in the background.
later,
Paul
Might need some colour correction. I'd also work on the colour of the orginal pix.
I'm not too keen on the skeleton idea.

Finished 7th in the competition. Some 65 or 66 entries total, of which 25 made it to the big screen through a jury screening, so all in all not too shabby. It was pretty much as I thought it would be, i.e. entries that had a hand-made look to them fared better than more clinical 3D-pics .. Separate freestyle 2D and freestyle 3D compos would have been a better idea.
Color correction, yup, there are lots of things that could be done with this pic but I had a "green feel" for this pic and that's it now :) .. I attempted to do some hanging moss and other gunk to emphasize the lost&forgotten -feeling but didn't have the time to get anything convincing done. So, it's finished now and it's time for a new project with lessons learned from this one. Thanks for the compliments and critics and ideas, feel free to keep them coming :)
Ah, by the way, those are Finnish Air Force markings, not RAF. Not entirely historically accurate perhaps, but too many people mistake the early FAF markings to the nazi cross so I gave myself some freedom on this.

so the Finns flew Messerschmitts?

Very nice...!
I would have made the background forest a bit darker/less saturated to bring out the plane more... And more vines, etc. like you mentioned...
