As I'm just starting to use FFX I wonder what's the main difference between styling (with guides) in Layout and Modeler. So far I understand that it's either or and not both, right?

I just tested hair on an object in Layout, but after merging two polys in Modeler the model did have a bold spot in Layout at this very same position. So I guess the guide system in Layout won't allow any changes on the object, or is there a refresh button? For the guides in Modeler, do they work differently? Am I able to spin some polys and don't screw my guides up?

As I need to render for print I like the control in layout to go for this one style, but if changing just one poly damages the whole guide system in a way that I need to start styling from scratch, it seems to be a big problem.

Do displacement maps work with both kind of hair guides and what about bones and morphs?

Any tips of what suits what purposes best, advantages and drawbacks?

Cheers
Thomas

P.S.:Is there a trick to style the hair in such ways that it lies flat in long streaks on the object, without growing into it (e.g. horse and cow fur)?
