View Full Version : How much did you pay for gasoline today?
Mostly I'm interested in what people in the US have paid for gasoline today or very recently, but it would be interesting to know what people all over the rest of the world are paying too.
I just filled up my tank at $1.81/gallon. I haven't paid prices like that for gas since I think Spring of 2004. And to think it was only a few months ago I was paying $3.95 or so!
This is in Florida, btw. I think the average price here is around $1.95-2.00/gallon right now.

We're paying (in Canada) about $2.52 USD a gallon right now, down from a peak of about $5.10 USD earlier this year.

Between $1.89 and $1.74 depending on what area of town you're in down here in Charlotte, NC.
We were paying as much $4.50 after the last big hurricane hit texas a couple of months ago...that's a pretty big swing!

It's been around $1.65-$1.70 the last week or so.
Well, I paid about £1 / Litre of unleaded petrol (yes, petrol not gas!) :D
So that works out:
1 US gallon = 3.78541178 litres
1.00 GBP = 1.52801 USD
So, $5.7841470539578 / Gallon (that right?)
But we are a much smaller landmass, so we can get to places quicker, so you never know, it might all work out in the wash!
Something I've always wanted to know, if Americans call petrol, gas, what do they call gas? And if it's gas, how do you know if someone means gas-gas, or gas?
:D

We have two flavors here: 88 and 92 octanes.
My Civic Hybrid likes 92 octanes. I fill the tank with 40 litres (lasts one month) and paid last time almost 10 pesos per litre. This is something like 3 dollars/gallon, but the price of gas here is not tied to international prices, it goes up every month.

When you call someone American, do you mean the people living in the contintent, or just that part of the subcontinent were they call themselves Americans? :D

Thats a good question Marklar.
In that movie Sylvester Stallone wanted that guy to call it fuel.
Anyway
Gas is just short for Gasoline.
Gas is just short for Natural Gas, the stuff you cook and heat houses with.
Gas is just short for any gas, like hydrogen.
See its simple Marklar.

France 1.09 Euro/Liter , so that is about 5,31846$ the gallon
Yeah Matt, that's why I specified "gasoline" in the question. Normally I would just say "gas", but I know we have alot of petrol users here, and it's also been pretty cold in alot of places in the US lately. "Gas" can also mean natural gas for heating and cooking, but of course that's not measured by the gallon.
But yeah, if I tell my wife here I need to go get gas, she'll Know I mean for my car. Either that or I'm going to Taco Bell. ;)
If I tell her I'm going to get gas for the grill, she'll know I mean propane, but I'd usually just say I'm going somewhere to get propane.
We still pay approx. $2.30 for regular and approx $2.50 for premium up here in Stamford, Connecticut.

Yes it's gas from beans and gas for the car. Thus, it's a common joke in the US for college boys to say "We're out of gas!... Not any more!".
re: prices
In SF, CA we're at $2.33, a little more than the rest of the US, but we just prefer our dinosaurs freshly squeezed.
Something I've always wanted to know, if Americans call petrol, gas, what do they call gas? And if it's gas, how do you know if someone means gas-gas, or gas?

It's called a Fart. Most Americans run out of the room when they have to expel "gas". :)
We are paying $1.72 per gallon in Central California.
And our Government makes more on each gallon of gas than the oil companies here too.
Sad situation since the Government tries to make Americans hate the oil companies for being greedy. :) Almost makes you laugh...almost. :(

Atlanta, Ga | US $1.67/gallon for gasoline
The term petrol is used very rarely. Sometimes in business, the term petroleum is used when talking about their use in the plastics industry. "Petroleum prices are up..blah blah blah"
I paid $1.59 last night. That's here in West Chester, Ohio. I think in Norwood it's even lower. This is the first time in years I've filled up my car for under $20. It was about 1/5 full.
Over here, the price of gasoline can only be adjusted by the "Public Services Regulatory Agency". They set the prices for gasoline, water and electricity for the country. (Also for gas-gas but that's only used by a few park rangers in the mountains, so it doesn't count.) They've currently set it to about $4.72/gallon, if all my conversions are correct.
Supposedly all the taxes for fixing the streets are already included in that price but it must be all be invested in "hole expansion" because the craters in them look more impressive and monumental each day.
And it seems normal that the people of the United States of America would call themselves Americans. It seems that the people of every country called United States of Something are just called Somethingans. Like the United States of Mexico and Mexicans. I guess it was a race. The first country in the continent to become independent could claim dibs on the name.
Well...in Woodbridge, VA (suburb of Wash.,D.C) @ Sheetz is $1.54.

Unfortunately I had to be at the office today. My vacation day got cancelled, so I ventured into Taylor, Texas today and found $1.48 gas at Walmart. Amazingly enough, it didn't wreak of detergent.
Just think... Two months ago it cost $110 to fill my tank. This time I was on vapors and filled it up for $45.
I was so pleased, I went out and bought myself an iPhone. :D If these prices keep up for 4 more weeks, I'll pretty much break even.

This will be a huge benefit for the economy. When I'm saving $50 per week on gas, it gives me a lot more income to spend.

Many chains aren't as quick to catch up (for obvious reasons). Shell stations for one are pretty consistent in this area. Just about everwhere I went, it was $1.85-ish. All the Exxon's were $1.75-ish.
I'm sure it will bounce in the next 3 to 4 weeks, but the big question will be how much. A few months ago I said I'd be happy to get back to $1.89 (where the actual value should have been) and I was assuming that was pretty much a pipe dream.
If we really want to stop the b.s. fuel prices bouncing around like a jack rabbit, we need to regulate those a-holes screwing around in the futures markets. What's the best way to do that? ... Make those b@stards actually take delivery of trhe product. Bam .. instant stabilization.

Prices are insane, and are unfair, this is almsot text book profiteering.
Most of the gas/fuel/petrol produced for the european market by Royal Dutch Shell is done at Pernis Rotterdam, for that same gas we pay 1 euro and 40 cents per liter.
The same gas from that plant gets sold at some countries for no less than 16 euro cents (what's up with this picture? So dragging that fuel half way across europe makes the fuel cost less??? what?)
Not to mention, the Saudi sheiks charge (at the moment) somewhere around 80 dollars per barrel of crude oil, the actual price to pull that oil out of the ground costs them, wait for it, somewhere around 2 dollars per barrel, how's that for a mark up.

I dont know how much is that in gallons, thus I dont know how much in Dollars per Gallon.
All petrol is Premium, and all are mixed with water and low quality.

$1.579 to $1.699 here in northwest Ohio. It's amazing how many $$$ are made from that $0.009 tacked on at the end. According to the EIA (Energy Information Administration), the U.S. uses some 390 million gallons/day. That's a nice little windfall of over $3.5 million/day.
This is no different than retailers selling something for let's say $99.99 instead of $100.00. I've always said that some people will drive 100 miles to save a buck.

I know the question is about gasoline but my current car runs on diesel. This was down to £1.049p/litre yesterday here in the UK when I put £30 worth in. Nice to see the price down to a much more reasonable level but I'd love to know why it's an extra 15p/litre for diesel over unleaded petrol ? That could be had for £0.899p/litre yesterday. Fortunately, I'm getting 75-80mpg at the moment so I get to drive 470+ miles before needing to top up again :)

Yeah, that's what I am afraid of. It happened to me already. I cant prove it was watered down but my car ran real crappy on a tank of gas from one of those places. I would rather pay the extra 3 cents and get the brand name. I have brand loyalty I guess. The same way I would never buy a a Daewoo TV or a Apex TV DVD player.

I paid £1.05 per litre of Diesel in Birmingham, UK, on thursday. That's .... $1.54 per LITRE!!!
Yeah, that's what I am afraid of. It happened to me already.
I agree. I have family indirectly involved with trucking companies that say the same thing.
You might get the same thing 95% of the time. Many times these no-name gas stations get leftovers from the brand name companies trucks.
But they also get gas from tankers with water and other debris in their truck tanks. It's more of a problem with the delivery trucks than the source.
For me I'll take a "brand name" for a few cents more than deal with a bad running car and spending a couple hundred to fix it like happened in our town a few months back to hundreds of motorists.
Agreed.
Any kind of debris can clog your fuel filter if it happens enough. And if you don't know the signs, you won't know what to look for. Your car simply won't start, and you have no idea why.
Changing a fuel filter on most cars is pretty straightforward and easy and the filter itself is pretty cheap if you do it yourself, but a mechanic will charge out the a** for it, not to mention a towing fee.
Better safe than sorry, as they say.

According to a website that lists the cheapest petrol stations in Sweden, the cheapest you can find is $4.72 per gallon.
Speaking of exchange rates and the cost for things (this is OT, though), I had a look at the price of the Mac Pro today.
Price in the UK: £1860
Price in the US, translates into £1949
The UK price is after the 17.5 % tax, the US price is BEFORE tax.
Thanks to the plummeting pound sterling and Apple not updating their prices to match, their products are now cheaper in the UK after sales tax than they are in America before sales tax. How amazing is that?

Don't forget that from Monday VAT is only 15%, so the price should be slightly lower. So buy now(ish) before the rate returns to 17.5% (or was it 18.5%..I think they're still discussing that one :D) in 2010 :)
