View Full Version : HDR video format? How to solve this?

Hi all,

Strolling over from the LW side, I have another small project I'd like to use SE on. It's basically a single shot of about 3 minutes from LW, but due to some technical issues there are various sections that need to fade in and out of each other. So far so good.

However, the footage is in HDR format, as it needs quite extensive re-exposure in post. I could do this on a per-clip basis, but it requires an animated re-exposure over the entire clip so this would be nearly impossible. I was thinking to use Digital Fusion to do this.

How do I get HDR's as a clip into SE without dropping the bit depth? Image sequences are not supported for HDR, and I am not aware of a video codec or storage container format that supports HDR.

I could do everything in DF I suppose, but that would be highly uncomfortable.

if you have After Effects you can easily do it in there.

Sorry, I don't.

I was hoping between SE and DF I could solve the issue...

AFAIK, SE is only 8-bit.

Hi All,

yeah it's been awhile...
SE is only 8 bit at this time....thou I do have higher hopes for the future...

Your best solution at this time is using Fusion.

That would give you the best visual control.
If you are still needing to use an NLE...then save off to an 8 bit format and then edit it...FYI, I don't know of an NLE that supports HDR color depths native....at least yet.

When the topic of HDR image import came up in another thread, I did some web searching, and couldn't find any.

I think they will come at some point, but for now, it's a matter of tweaking the exposures before they get to the NLE.

Good to see you back Ray.

Like they said, SE is only 8 bit and although it will load the HDR images, you can't do what your looking for which is change the exposure a step or two in either direction.
But Fusion does a great job of this.
Are you using OpenEXR format rendered out of LW using the DB&W exrTrader plug-in?

I highly recommend this plug-in.

Take care,
