How on earth should i tackle this....so far ive kicked it off with a tesselated sphere but after that im clueless.
Any advice on how to best tackle this would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't that some sort of adobe illustrator art thing? Maybe you can make a ring with a twist first.

Yeah-some smart alex has designed it and asked me to 3d-ify it! Hum-start off with a ring....then patch in the rest of the sphere...hum...interesting.
Im wrestling with it as i speak...im getting some nice shapes but still nothing close to the 2d visual.
Thanks for the suggestion...il give it a go :)

you can also boolean a twirlyshape out of a ball. i've been playing with it for 30min or so but it is indeed very hard to make something that looks like that. Good luck man!! ;)

Maybe this technique is usable? see attachment
Just stretch it a bit to fit your image a bit better..

Wow mr troll im impressed...thats neat..its a million times better than any of my attempts which im far too embarrassed to share.
Havnt got a clue how you managed to get this result-spesh the helix type bevel.
Care to give me a few tips or what tools to play with?

I think you can get something similar using a twist and bend.

Heh, yeah, tricky shape. You know most of the contours are all there, you might just want to try and spline patch it.

I started with a flat plane (just one poly). trippled it. Than I divided the flat plane using julienne2. Then I made a weight map. Then I bend that to a circle en scaled the inner points to 90%. Check the weight on the model. That tels you al lot ;).....
