View Full Version : avi wrapper slows

I saved a Ted Project as an avi and dropped it into Premiere 6.5 to render out as mpeg for a dvd (we don't have any other way to encode mpeg currently).
However, compared to dropping a physical file into the timeline, the wrapped avi makes the system slower than a turtle in wet cement. I checked the system resource usage and I'm only using about 10% of the available cpu but it's using almost all of my ram and my hard drives are churning away. (Perhaps it's trying to background render?)
My question: Does it regularly act like this, or am I doing something wrong?
I knew I'd take a performance hit saving as avi instead of rendering, but this is a rather drastic difference. Rendering a regular video file as mpeg churns away at about 27fps at the default Adobe settings while using a wrapped avi only gets me about .08fps with the same settings.
As a workaround for now I'm just manually rendering my timeline from Ted and dropping the resultant file into premiere. I've got a dual xeon 2.8 system with all the goodies (up to newtek spec) that I can usually throw just about anything at.

Is it slow all the time or only at load time?
For me, it's only at load time with DFX or anytime I select the loaded file. Hmm, at that thought as you are always dealing with the file, I can imagine it could be rather painful to work with.
I feel your pain.

Hi Robert,
Importing the file is instant. Trying to drop it in the timeline is very slow and scrubbing is impossible for all practical purposes. If I wasn't in such a rush on these projects I'd just let it sit for a while and see if it got any better.
Thanks.
Or you could still buy some Premiere plugins from me.
(plug plug plug) They are avaiable on my web site.

Hi Bob,
We had considered your plugins, but essentially all we use Premiere for is as a glorified mpeg encoder :D, so I couldn't really justify the outlay to my boss (we rarely generate dvds). But we are casting an interested eye toward premiere pro; it would be neat to see what kind of cool song and dance you could make that do. I'm dreaming of dves with alpha and eq/dynamics in realtime...
Err umm,
So you and 75 freinds would pre order and wait 90 days?
Cause if 75 people are willing to go on my past record
and buy in I can be persauded. But ya think there are 75
folks in the entire Newtek group willing to get PPro plugins?

My .02 worth,
Spend $49 and buy Tmpeg. The encoding outshines Premiere and will make a great Mpeg2 for DVD. We use it all the time and it works great.

Bob,
I honestly don't know if we could even buy PPro and plugins right now [grimace]. Sometimes with budgeting here you get funds right away and sometimes you have to plug away for a few months or so to get purchase approval. I'd hate to have you run off and start something that wouldn't properly reimburse you for all the effort programming involves.

Personally I have complete faith in you. (Wish I could say the same for Newtek)
If you could get Premiere Pro to support Toaster in real time (gotta include the color correction feature.. That's the biggie) then I think that would be worth $300.00 to me... In advance. I know it's not 75 people, but it's the best I can do.
I used your plugin for Premiere 6 (You and I spoke quite a bit) and I was very impressed. It handled a 2.5 hour project with no trouble. I just need it to use some of Premiere's features in real time..
I guess one question I have is this: Does the new Premere Pro have the potential to work better with toaster, or just about the same?
So... you interested?

Its all different inside. I just dipped my toe in the water to
port my effects over and had a longer look. YUV inside is
way nice but it creates differences I cant explain.
>Are you intrested?
Dunno yet its wat too early.
But more and more posts like this and who knows..
Ya got any more freinds :D
