Am working on my website, and had an idea for a logo.. problem is I can't decide which looks better, the color one or the b&w one.. anyone have any critiques for me? And yes, I know it's JUST a logo, but like I told them over in the binaries group.. it's my BABY! 8)

I was thinking more little shrooms clustered around the base would be nice... but don't want to overkill it.. will eventually trim it height wise and use it as my site intro logo...

What ya think?

And the B&W version...

Sorry, but I think you are on the wrong track here.

I think there is too much detail by far in it - if the logo is successful, you will be reproducing it all over the place, and this one will not look good small.

Too little contrast between the title part, the object, and the background.

Any particular reason it is against a black background? It would stand out MUCH better against white, (and then you could also use it for a letterhead, or business card easily).

The actual (red and green) mushroom I like though - it's also bold enough that you could produce very recognisable ones, right down to icon size.

And for screen use maybe move the light source up a bit - windows 3d screen furniture is shaded like its lit from top left.

Hope that helps,
Nick

I think it's great - I would revolve the camera and view it straight on to make it easier to read.

What about a mixture of b/w and color - silvery text and a colour mushroom?

Thanks... actually the dark color scheme is to match the web page background.. perhaps "logo" in this case was not accurate description.. this particular version is mainly for the web page itself.. I am going to try a stylized simplified version for any cards..

I want to get the feel down here though.. then I can go for other stuff..

richwave: I'll try the camera though straight on it looses a lot of character and actually becomes harder to read since it is so long left to right.. grin...

starbase1:I'll fiddle with the lightsource... and the page background is black... that's mainly why I went with black for this shot.

Thanks both of ya.

It's a good concept, i'd think it would be easier if you tried to do it in Photoshop or somethin. I threw this together in about 3 min.

Mushroom is LW, everything else is PS.

If it is going to be on a web page with a black background that is cool, but I would put some more light on the text of the logo. It really fades into the background and is hard to read. Unless of course that is the effect you're after :)

I can't say I like either. The font is generic and the perspective makes it difficult to read.
Do you plan on using this for business or something, ever? Maybe for print one day? What you have won't work very well for either.

You should be able to see it, read it and understand it in about 3 seconds.

You should be able to make it work on white or black.

Try looking online or in a book at successful logos and try and see what works and what doesn't. The yellowpages are a great source for logo ideas, both good and bad.

I'm with just about everybody else here.

Even if you don't plan on using a logo in other media, it's always a good idea to do the initial design with multi-media in mind, and build from the ground up.

For example, try translating the design to a simple B&W (or even greyscale) design for print, then expand on that. It's a lot easier to take a logo design into the 3D world from 2D than it is the other way around.

Giving it legibility and a distinct outline go a long way towards the final look.

Well, i don't know if i agree with all that. I happen to like it. I didn't find it hard to read or understand. And i think that this would look good and a webpage, and maybe the mushroom on its own would look good if it was small. Now im no pro designer, so i don't have a lot of authority to my opinion, but i think it's not bad. I enjoy designs that are different. Most professional logos out there are to generic for my tastes.

Mclaren: love the logo you did.. clean.. I just want to do something Lightwave oriented..

dnauert: Yeah, its for a web page with black bakground.. and I plan on redoing the logo perhaps with a more interesting font and redoing the bevels and thickness of the letters so you get more light distribution.. I kind of screwed up the bevels, they were way too narrow and I didn't get nearly the highlights I wanted.. took me about 5 minutes to do the logo.. arg.. WIP.. WIP!!! grin

Zarthustra: yeah it may be a tad harder to read than it should be.. picked the first font I could import into LW that I had used before.. as far as understanding it goes.. it didn't take me more than 3 seconds, but then I have to plan on everyone doing so.. thx

Bionic Antboy: Well to be honest, if I never get anything more intense than kick *** still images I'll die happy.. I don't plan on getting into tv or animation for a few years.. am looking to be oriented more toward a Rand-McNally Atlas for a science fiction setting so I can get by with stills.. I'll try and work on the legibility..

drclare: Thx... I will work on making it easier to see and read though.. have a good one!

Anyone know a good site for mushrooms? I had to do this one from scratch and wondered if there were any different models out there..

Thnx
