Howdy all,

Here is a spot I finished recently with the crew at Oh Hello in Seattle. I did the particle puzzle piece work where the pieces form objects.

I originally tried to do this with LW particles, but couldn't figure it out that way. I ended up cracking the nut with HD instance (yay!) by attaching puzzle pieces to the vertexes. I made a morph map of the ojbects exploded with jitter (in modeler), then used Smartmorph with an effector to control the explosion/dispersion of the objects.

The girl was actually sourced from Quidam and then animated in LW with the basic Quidam rig which worked pretty well for a total character animating newbie like me.

I rendered it out in 9.5 and it was comped by the Oh Hello crew in AE with the additional loose particles added in Particular.

cheers!

You are my hero, mono.
It has a really pro edge to it. IMO this is the real life everyday stuff that really shows if someone is capable of doing jobs or not...

...and you certainly are.

Yes. Very cool.

Would like to see you go into more detail on how you accomplished it. It's a very cool exploding effect.

Very cool stuff. I liked the look, style, and fx (exploding). Nicely done.

Hey Guys, thanks for the kind words. I just want to make sure I'm clear that I didn't make this whole spot, this was really and Oh Hello production, I just helped with this FX stuff. As a freelancer, sometimes you run the show, sometimes you lend a hand. :)

Since there seems to be a bit of interest, I downloaded the Camtasia Studio demo and made a tutorial. I'm amazed how easy Camtasia is, by the way! We'll see if my server is okay with the extra traffic.

Hopefully you guys can improve the technique here. As you can see it really only works for blowing up vertex based objects, but you could probably have a lot of fun with multiple effectors and maybe some HVs, etc. Wish I had more time to experiment!

cheers!

hmm. not sure why that QT linnk didn't work. I uploaded the file and it worked then I just checked and the filesize was zero. I reuploaded and it works now.

alternately: vfxcast. good luck with the compression on that video though!

Thanks for the tut monovich. You can also down load TechSmith's (makers of Camtasia) Jing. It's like Camtasia lite. Easy to use, free, but only will record 5 minutes max of video/mic. It's what I used to do those videos of the roof tile tool in LWCAD v3.
