vertex color map

I'm using a vertex color map to paint on an object. When I choose Edit > Burn Shading Colors, nothing seems to happen. Does choosing this option actually create an image somewhere? Exactly what does it do?

In Layout go to the surface editor:
Advanced Tab:
Vertex Color Map.....is the fourth box down and is there
that you apply the vertex color map you made.
