I'm by no means a LW noob. Been using it since the toaster days on the Amiga. But I'll be darned if I can't figure this Motion Designer out.

So I've been running some simple experiments looking at tutorials and books. And I still can't get it to do what I want. Don't know if it's the limit of the app or just my knowledge. I'm betting it's my knowledge.

Ok, so this is what I've been trying to do. In my tests I create a long skinny box. It’s 2 poly columns divided a bunch of time up and down. I copy and paste a bunch together semi side by side in a clump. So image this as a long ponytail. I make sure it's about 2 feet high. At the very top of the strands are fixed polys for each strand.

Take it into Layout. Object subdivide = last. MD gravity -9.8 (I got this from a tut). Calc resolution 40.

Then I play with the settings.
Mainly:
Weight about 1
Spring around 50
Viscosity around 2
Resist 1
Parallel Resistance 40%
Sub Structure 200
Hold I've tried 0 to 250
Stretch about 10%

All right, so what I try to do as my test is see if I can get the hair to sort of twirl around from a quick turn of the head. Let's say you walked up behind her and she quickly turned. As I observed the hair would normally spin around eventually wrapping around the neck in real life.

What I get is a nothing close. For some reason the hair seems really heavy. So I tried adjusting the weight and the gravity. Doesn't seem to help.

Another thing I try is like a jump so I animate the hair going up then in like 10 frames I force it down. It just bounces a little if even that. It doesn't bloom up like I would expect.

So after this long message if you bothered to read this far. I was hoping someone could give some advice. I mostly see shorthaired characters not long. And with the lack of up to date MD tuts or any kind of info it's hard to figure out what's doing what. I'm about to pick up the Class on Demand DVD for MD. Maybe that will help me.

Any ideas???

Thanks,

well one thing i can throw in that might help just incase your not aware of this i noticed allot of tutorials dont mention this, but make sure your character is as close to human size as possible cause otherwise your settings need to be tweeked very high. And this can get very complicated.what i did when i tried this was i started with only a few poly chains so to make the md calaculations allot shorter.good luck hope this helped...

Right, and I noticed this mentioned in a tutorial somewhere. So I made the hair strands 2 feet. Which is kinda long. But a head is about 10 inches or so, so it's not too bad.

Thanks for replying.
