Format Error 110 $1_LWO2

After working on a model for days, a layer disappeared from Layout. I closed everything and the hub, and then tried reloading the scene ... got the error message "Format Error 110 $1_LWO2".
When I tried loading the model into modeler, I get the same message.
Does anyone know how I can fix the file?

Using code from the SDK, I was able to identify a VMAP (point selection set) with no name. There's just enough space in the file format to poke in a single character without having to adjust any offsets.
I just stuck in an 'X' and voila ... everythings back to normal.
