Hi

I am trying to capture hdv footage from my cannon hv30 using speedEdit.
It captures ok but at 1440 x 1080.

I believe the HV30 has a full HD cmos sensor (1920 x 1080),
which is what I am after.

Anyone have experience of the hv30 and speededit.
I cant figure out if its a setting in speededit or from the camera.

1440x1080 is the standard size for HDV. If you record HD to a MiniDV tape, it will be HDV and at 1440x1080 regardless of the sensor size.

That said, you can always upres to 1920x1080 on the timeline or when you render it out.

As mvansomeren correctly points out, the HDV spec is 1440x1080, and when the HV30 records anything to tape, it records it in HDV format, so whatever is on the tape will be 1440x1080.

There is a method for recording 1920x1080 out of the HV30, but in this case you will not be recording to tape. The HV30 can send the live 1920x1080 data from the sensor out of its HDMI connection at the time you are filming. What you need is an hdmi cable running from the camera to a computer, and in the computer you will need to install a capture card such as the Black Magic Intensity which is designed for capturing 1920x1080 in realtime. This way you will be recording 1920x1080 to the computer's hard drive in realtime as you shoot.

Here are a thread on this method:
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/hdv2-canon-vixia-hv30-hv20-hv10/119284-hv20-bm-intensity-pro-raid-confusion.html

And a quasi-portable solution one user constructed:
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/hdv2-canon-vixia-hv30-hv20-hv10/97526-intensity-capture-station.html

As you can see, the major downside of capturing 1920x1080 from an HV30 is that you need to capture live to a computer. The benefit is an increase in video quality, but for most purposes the increase in video quality will not be worth it.
