View Full Version : Will VT2 files (.rtv, .cg, etc ...) load correctly into VT3 ?

Hello All;
Please excuse me if this was already answered. I recall reading a discussion about this issue but it didn't seem to be responded to in the recent week or two since T3 started shipping.
A friend and I were working on a Wedding slide show in VT2. Then VT3 arrived (While I was at siggraph). Now, I am anxious to install VT3 but do not want to if my previous files won't be compatible. Can anyone verify that files previously created in VT2 will load into VT3 - VT-Edit, CG, Aura, etc ? Or can someone verify that they won't load ?
Also, is there any special proceedure I need to follow to install VT3 ? Do I just unstall the previous VT2, and the latest builds and special effects libraries - and then install VT3 ?

;)
Install and enjoy. Even midstream in projects and during beta, this puppy worked very well with all the old assets. Only issue came up with the picvideo codec but was resolved for future clips using that codec.
Go for it. It'll be worth it and fun.

There is still one problem remaining that a few users may encounter when trying to open T[2] projects in VT[3].
If your T[2] project contains cropped images (including JPGs and TIFFs) they will not be properly sized and positioned when opened in VT[3].
This is because they wrote the cropping over to be more efficient, but in the process lost come backward compatibility. They say this is very difficult to fix, so I don't know if it will be fixed. I hope it will, because I have projects like this, but it may not be.
All other issues related to T[2] projects opening in VT[3], including crashes when opening T[2] projects, have been fixed.

I'm assuming this refers to the PicVideo MJPEG codec, or is it one of their other ones?
Does this mean that any footage captured using the PicVideo codec in VT2 is completely unusable in VT3, or is there a way to work around it?

I have to unfortunately report that I am one of those people. I have a very complex project done in T2 (shot in PAL, edited in NTSC, with lots of carefully sized and positioned overlays) which loads (no crashes) in the release version of T3, but almost everything is positioned and sized differently ("wrong") from the original, including the base PAL footage.
This wouldn't be a big issue for me (just do all your "new" work in T3), except that this is a project I am keeping around for periodic updates and reissues (and payments) from the client. Right now I am keeping a bootable T2 partition around just for this project, but I could (and probably will) go through and manually "fix" everything in T3 when I have some free time.
I know from software development: there are always priorities. The T3 software is a whole new generation which does things in a much more flexible way than T2 (and don't get me wrong, I love it!). I don't believe there's any technical reason why the T2 project loader couldn't properly translate all the settings from T2 projects, it's just that there is understandably more pressing code to be written, especially involving the stability, speed, and quality of the new features and getting VT3 out the door in a timely manner (you can't get to all the bugs and requested features, or it would never be released). Maybe they'll get to this someday, maybe they won't. I'm not going to gripe about it too much, but I feel I need to report this deficiency since it is an issue for me.
Good luck, -MG

What happens when you try to load it in T3 VT-Edit?
(Tip: in order to see your T2 project in the file-open requester, you will need to choose "*.toasteredit project" from the file-type drop-down menu).
Project files are part-binary, so looking at them with notepad isn't usually helpful. ;)
Good luck, -MG

Thanks, I did figure it out that it wasn't automatic and that you had to change the file type.
Thanks
