Hi
Here's a fish me and workmate did at work inbetween projects.
Primarily it was intended for testing rigging techniques in Lightwave but the animation turned out so sweet we decided to render and make a short clip out of it. :)
Some of you might recognize the animation as the rig was shown in the NewTek booth at Siggraph a few weeks ago. Also worth mentioning is that the rig + model and textures will be part of the upcomming LW 9.5 content. I plan on doing some videotutorials supporting the rig since it may be somewhat complex for the uninitiated. :)
Radek did the model and render while I rigged and of course animated. ;)
It's modelled in Lightwave and ZBrush, rigged/animated in Lightwave and shaded/rendered in Maya/MentalRay. We also plan on doing a Lightwave version for the light/shade/render since LWs 3DMotionBlur and DOF are so neat.
Comments are of course very welcome.
You can download the animation right here: ftp://FTP_Cod:FTP_Cod@cageman.dyndns.org:21/Cod.avi (roughly 10MB in size).
Cheers
Mikael

Very nice allover!
Looking forward to see if/how you pull of an all LW version of this and a rundown of the controls to see how you animated this sucker.

I think this is a top notch work. Specially the animation.
I´m also interested in the little bubbles. Are they volume HVs added to particles? I like a lot how they move and they are sooo important for the whole thing to work they way it does.

Great animation,.. but I'm a bit unsure why Maya was used for rendering, was it because of the boubles in the background?

Hi!
The bubbles were done with Mayas particles (as streaks), animated with a nosie and rendered with 3D-mblur in Mentalray. In Fusion the blur was further tweaked.

Hi,
Maya was used because it was a good oppertunity for Radek to get more experience with Maya and Mentalray. There aren't really anything with this animation that couldn't be done with vanila LW.

Thanks! :)
But I don't get the laser thing... please explain! :)
EDIT:
Radek says: The lasers were very unstable and had to be removed in postprocessing. :D

It's a fish thing:

Or perhaps the sharks with lasers on their heads? (Austin Powers reference). Great looking piece.

Call me Mr. Nitpicky but the animation in seems nice and loose but there seems to be no tail movement on the animation out as the fish moves by the camera.
Lighting, texture and compositing is fantastic!

Well spotted! :)
It's a hard angle to animate from though. I did a 30 min stint at adding that extra whipping tail movement when it swims out, but whatever poses I came up with looked utterly stupid from the cameras pov. So I decided not to do it, because it could have ended up eating alot of time and making things even worse. :)

I'm glad I wasn't going crazy then :) I've been looking at render bars all day on my AE projects and it was a good break to see some nice 3D stuff.
Now, how hard would it be to tattoo a logo on the side of it and sell it to that company? ;)
