Maybe an image map of some thatch material you're looking for with some procedurals or a bit of fur on top of that... You would want your bumps and specularity to show the thatching...

You could use sas to do it...you might have to "braid" some strands to get what you want though...

Or some thickened 2 point polys... just sticks basically... a bit rotated and moved about...

You could use a bunch of points spread out as the side view of a bush straw, extrude into 2 points polys and then mess them about till it looks kinda right... use some rotation, move, squashing, etc. You would have to set the line thickness for them to show up...

You could have some variation in the lines thickness too...

Or make copies of bundles and paste into new bundles...

Sounds a bit what Sasq does too...

I am also thinking texture mapping with the right deformation could get the grooves of the thatch... and a bit of geometry for strands sticking out...

I remember seeing this cute little house with a thatched roof some time ago... Made by a Brazilian I think... may have been here or over at CG Talk... forgot...

Wow Dave your art work is great. I love the Woodland cottage and the English village in your scenic backdrops section. Plus the story about the security guard accidently getting painted while he slept made me laugh. :)

you have to make chained points to "guide" sas- you then twist them together or use lath etc to get the shapes you want...
There is a "Make long hair using guide chains" check box option...
Flay.com has a lot of tools to help you make long chains for sas...

Hey Rich,
Glad you liked my stuff! That security guard was a scream, perpetually drunk, happy, but totally hopeless as a guard!

Sasquatch worked really well for the thatch and can give a render a nice detailed quality to it. It (Sasquatch)also really helps to make cg look less cg.
