I played around with FiberFX last week and came up with these. I'm encouraged by what I see so far with this addition to LW. Comments are welcome.

Outstanding! Was FibexFX used on just the fringe on the right image?

I was wondering the same thing!

Nice! So each fringe is a braid?

Yep. There are 700 of them. See screenshot with FFX settings.

Sexy. Great application for FiberFX.
I suppose then it could also be used for steel cables in bridges, no? I wonder if it can be used with an IK chain an animate through a pulley system.
Man... I wish I could go to Chipotle...

nice work! thanks for posting some unique experimentation instead of the same 'ol sub-d model with default hair settings on it.

I saw this on the SQ forums...it's fantastic! It's one of the best examples of of one of the new 9.5 features. This needs to be submitted to NT for marketing purposes, seriously solid work.

It works great on the lampshade details, but the grass doesn't look so convincing.
Are there any examples of the toughest use of fibre plugins, which is realistic long hair?

I could see this on a Pixar Short or something like that Big Buck Bunny. It might need a different type of lighting to be pulled off as super realistic.

Very nice indeed. Now post a start to finish tutorial on how the rest of us can get the same results.

Wow I'm honored. Apparently NT thought it worthy. http://www.newtek.com/lightwave/95_gal.phpGee if I would have known it was going to be so well received I would have tightened things up a bit, after all they were just some quick tests to see what FFX might be capable of. Thanks all, and be sure to check out NT's new LW site.

Wow! very nice!
I love the use of FiberFX for the fringe of the lampshade... I hadn't thought about that sort of use.
Good thinkin' :D

I might be crazy but I think the texture of the lampshade itself in the first image is the coolest part of the whole thing. Is that using fiberFX somehow, or how else did you get such a nice fabric look?

I have a project on my hands that needs some braided, hanging fringe similar to the lampshade image.
I can't however figure out how to use an existing model (e.g. a modeled braid) as an actual repeatable fiber. There's a tool in Modeler's FiberFX tools to convert geometry into guides, but not into actual fibers. The FiberFX User Guide says it's possible though.
Looking at your image and the fact that the fibers look like braids, it looks like you achieved this somehow. I know I can just clone my geometry all over in Modeler, but I'd rather use the Fiber plugin if possible.
How did you go about achieving this (if this is the way you did it)?

Wow that was ages ago. They are just fiber guides. Select the polys where you want the strands attached and go to Setup>FiberFX and experiment to get roughly the look you want. Save and send the object to Layout to surface and render. Do your test renders at your final resolution and camera location otherwise be prepared for unexpected results as the look can change drastically based on those two parameters. Use limited region to speed those test renders. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick response. However, I don't think you understood my question. I know how to grow plain fibers in Modeler and set it up in Layout to render. From the looks of your render, it looks like you have custom polygon-based fibers in the form of pre-modeled braids.
However, both from your description and from the screenshots, it sounds like this isn't the case. How did you get the thick "braided" look for the fringe, is that just FiberFX settings and NOT pre-modeled geometry?
I'm curious because the FiberFX user guide says it can be done. In the last section under "FiberFX Strand Modeler > Strand Maker", it says:
You can also use LightWave Modelers curve drawing tools like ‘Sketch’ and ‘Spline Draw’ to create fiber strands by hand, or convert whole objects into fibers.

Oh- okay, yes they are just fibers grown in Modeler. The thick braided look was accomplished in Layout.

Did you use textures or something? I looked at the screen-grab of your FiberFX settings and tried getting the thick/braided look on plain fibers, but it didn't turn out anywhere close. I didn't try any textures though, as I'm sure I could get something with that.

All the shading was done inside of FiberFX. I curled and kinked them in FiberFX Strand Modeler.
