Specific Bone Setup...Anyone teach me?

This Gif is from China that done with LW bones. But I lost all the tutorials about the bone setup process.

Can someone teach me?

I saw something similar to that in Keyframe magazine several months ago and it used expressions to control a piston arm like that. Unfortunatley, I don't have access to my keyframe magazines right now or I could be more help.
