What species of Dinosaur is this then?
He seems off balance, he'd fall flat on his ***.

Wait! He hasn`t modeled the enormous teeth yet ;)

Wireframe please!

joril:

its obvious that its becoming an velociraptor, let him finish the model adn we will see how good its gonna be.. me for my side was hoping to see some stegosaurus or some other not yet modeled friend. i am also a big fan of dinosaurs. i already made two threats about them here... the saga continues nad pteranodon inflight... if someone wants to check out

:):):) oh yes ... the teeth will balance him :)

Joril : it started as an Utahraptor ... but I'm not sure what will it be :) I'm using no reference pictures.

I'll soon post a wireframe, now I don't dare because of the 25000 polys :) ... I'll refine it those days...

Demon : I'm also planning to do a stegosaurus...

thanks for your input !

Cool, dddMan. Can't wait to see!

i am also creating my own jurassic park. there is also a brachiosaurus tut i did on newteks tutorial corner. maybe someone has seen it. i am also planning on doing that stegosaurus and many more :)

thanx JDaniel

Demon , I've seen your tut ... very nice !

thx dddMan,

well finish ur model and lets do something together :)

Neat. But as said before, the feet either need a back toe, or heel, or the dinosaur needs to be centered above the feet so it looks a little more balanced. Great start tho!

I wasn’t happy with the look of my model ... so I’ve redone the shape of the body … now it looks more like an Utahraptor .

Here’s a link to Framestore , the makers of “Walking with dinosaurs” , this page describes the process of production : www.framestore.com/dinosaurs/dino_home.html

OK Demon ... that's a promise.

Thanx Zombat.

And the wireframe :

looking good so far!!!

The wireframe has a very high poly count and I think it will be difficult to attach to arms or add further detail. You can add more polygons later when you need them, but in this early stage you don't need all those polygons.
It will also be a lot easier to animate a mesh with less polygons.

bbc wwd utahraptor fact file (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dinosaurs/fact_files/sky/utahraptor.shtml) Here are some reference pics, if you don't allready know this site!

Thanx Mithrandir ... yes... the poly count is high, but I'm not modeling in subpatch mode, so it's ok... :) . I'm trying to add as many details as possible...

I've worked on the head today :

Great progress! The head really looks like the utha-raptor from wwd!

Why aren't you working with subpatches, it's great for organic objects? ( I used subpatches to create a T-rex myself) It keeps the poly count low and the objekts are smooth and easy to work with!

well... on my next model I'll start using subpatches... Thanx

well dddman u r getting there... i take u word .. next project lets do together ... cant wait...u got icq?

dddMan

no icq yet , Demon , better send me a PM... :)

I worked a bit on the claws today... I hope to finish this model before I get to old for 3d :D

Again: great progress!!

The claws should be bigger and now they look like a pointy finger. They will look a lot better if the claws are coming out of the finger with skin over the claws. http://bendotat.coolfreepage.com/claw-01.jpg I tried to illustrate it with this picture!

I can't say much about the head, so could you post a bigger image of the head?

Hey,

the head wasn't updated :) ... just the claws ... I'll work some more on it this week... or I hope so... :)

I’ve added the teeth … it looked kind of funny without it :) … I still need to work some more on the eyes, mouth and legs… Did I missed something?

Here’s a bigger image :

… a small update… now the model is anatomically correct. Any crits ?

dddMan

… the modeling on my Utahraptor is almost done … I would love to here some opinions before I start to texture it … the proportions are not exactly ok, but I can’t tell for sure what’s wrong …

you can download a bigger version here (2560x1920 172 kb) (http://www.dddmarket.com/dddmarket/html/pics/utahraptor/utahraptor.jpg /)

Looks really good so far!
The Utah raptor should get more muscle definition. And the area around the eye also needs some more detail before you apply a texture. Add eyelids and I think you should move the eyes a bit farther into the head. (nostrils would be nice too;))
I hope to see him textured soon.

I've worked on the head today :
I think not using SubDs is a mistake especially if you plan on animating it. Theres way too many polys IMO. One thing I think you should take a look at is utilizing edge loops which would help add detail without the extra geometry and will also help with deformations when you get around to animating it. With proper SubD modeling you can add detail only where needed. I would also model only the goross details and do the rest with texture maps.

I agree with Larry. If you're modeling him for a still image, then no problem. But if you're going to animate him, then you should go ahead now and multiply that polygon number by two because you're going to want to use triple on the polygons to keep from getting any non planar gons. Plus, deformations/endomorphs aren't going to be fun at all using regular polys. You wouldn't necessarily have more poygons as a subpatch model. In fact, your model looks like it could have been a subpatch model that's been frozen.

Hey guys,

I know ( now :) ) that not using SubDs is a mistake , but it's a mistake I have to live with :) ... strangely enough, but I've done some test and it deforms ok...

... :) dunno why but I like to model with poligons instead of SubD...

...the leg was modeled in Subd and then frozen ... long time ago... the rest is just clever smoothing...

Thanks a lot !

good job
I like the raptor.....

hehe, it looks like he is trying to peek over a fence cuz it seems to me he is standing on his toes....like it was said earlier in the forum, he should either have a heel, a back toe, or just be more 'flat footed'.

also, the arms look a bit 'pudgy' to me....should have more muscle definition...but im not sure what look your going for....

just some thought.....

Have any of you guys read the book written by Robert T. Bakker called Raptor Red?
