So for those of us who are not watching the streams or lucky enough to be there at Siggraph, other then the list that was given to us by Lee a week ago and the few little videos released over the last week, what else have we found out about Lightwave 8?
Anybody (besides LUX) unveiling a new package at Siggraph this year?

I've been watching William demoing the Character animation tools and the workflow looks really quick.
It looks like you can mix IK/FK, bake to Keyframes in the Timeline
lock heading pitch and bank from a right click
or and use the collision objects to tweak errors in bone deformation
The guys from Area 51 were on talking about "Children of Dune" which was all done in Lightwave.

And you can record a mouse movement ...

Maxon present Body Paint 2, apparently with an improved connection to Lightwave.
Also there seems to be a new version of messia:animate round the corner (well, pmg have it in their shop, but not in their news, yet).
Anything else?

Projection images for lights are visible in the light's view.

A lot more properties are mass editable in those objects panels (like turning multiple lights into other types of lights) Like you could for intensity, but now with a lot more propeties for them.

Event collision objects 'cutting' or 'sewing' meshes apart or together.
You can select points and sew them together point by point, and then the collision object can drive the cutting/sewing.

You can record point movement with the soft body tool, and then adjust those points using a magnet style tool frame by frame.
Similarly for the particles, you can adjust particle motions post calc, either frame by frame or adjust the whole motion path (just two of the settings... maybe more)
The bones are fully dynamic'd. Collision objects and wind objects were demostrated affecting them...

MMMM the LW demo is very nice...
Hulk teaser trailer done in lw?
George michael's freak video....Nice...
Some very nice F1 cars..
And the big LW mech is on there :)
I'm using nice way too much...
Tomb raider ( though I'm not overly impressed :P Sorry guys!)
Spy kids 2? or maybe 3?
Fincher's panic room intro I think....
Jet li in maybe the one?
Lots of ads and kids programmes by the looks of things...
Showing Buffy the Vampire finale, all done in LW (in 8 weeks), characters built in maya, backdrop done in lw, and animated all in LW, 5500 characters in one scene at one point. MD was used to drive the characters, offset using LScript. Explosions done in LW.
Maya couldn't handle the overhead, so they switched to LW after 2 weeks in maya!
The buffy guy also did children of dune. Lots of very nice particle stuff done with native particles and hypervoxels. All sets and environments done in LW. Done with 15 animators for 600 fx shots in 10 months (didn't quite catch it?)?
Huston Imax flick done by him entirely in LW.. Busy guy! (2 guys worked on the whole flick!)

Not the biggest deal and most of you probably know it all already but...
There seems to be a lot more flexablilty with key frames in layout. It looked like you could select them (all done without the graphic editor) and delete them, move them etc. all on the timeline. T
hey also rigged a whole model without going to any sub windows and using mainly a small right-click drop down. Took almost no time to rig the model. The Dynamics and IK are all VERY fast compared to how they were! Very nice for Soft Body Dynamics preview. Everything looks simplified- but actully more powerful if that makes sense...
something like 40 undo's for Layout...maybe per object?

New IK looks interesting.
apply IK on an entire character on one button press.
click the rotate handle channel (like the bank handle) and you get a mini menu with channel locking, (turning off heading etc) limit setting, and fixing objects. New IK LOOKS like mirai/animanium idea of complete ik, so you can lock a joint and it stays there, as you move the rest of the skeleton.
The ik you just grab a sub object (like a bone) and it iks along the chain, no goals needed...
Very very fast, 97 bones with dynamics are very fast...Jeez the arbitary shape collision is FAST!
Time line editing, key moving, deleting creating. Loverly jubberly.
Bone weight falloffs are graphically alterable (get a big red ball showing the influence)
Okay I'm definitely going to bed..

Looks like you can attach objects to a lower poly soft body object and have them be controlled by it without a recalc, either softly or hard.

There are many cool features, and more to come.
Imagine a one layer object, loaded into Layout. Add a collision and blow the thing apart.
Or how about instant keyboard clone of items, such as lights. Turn them all on or off, or shadows in one click, or parent or target them - all without the spreadsheet.
So many cool things.

Dan, are you talking about instancing?

What I really want to see is a G2-Style preview. I've heard that Stranahan posted a video of it but then it was taken down.
Hehe I downloaded all the 'teasers' whe they were posted, including that one!!!
Did look nice!

Glad about LW8 supporting mass editing of items without needing Spreadsheet, that used to sooooo annoy me!

It "seems" like L8 is pretty much ready to go. I wonder if L8.5 will be out in Q4.
