Ok Ya'll, I have learned many things about the Tricaster thanks to you guys but I am still pretty clueless about webcasting. Can you all help me with the step by steps? Say if I want to webcast to 5-10 people and say I want to webcast to 100's of people. How do I set it up? What equipment do I need? What CDN services should I get. How would I go about a WMV stream versus a Flash Stream. What is Push, what is Pull? I need the entire play by play. I have not found this anywhere in a manual or on this website.
If this has been covered please provide me with some links.
Thanks guys!
~Jody

Chapter 10 of the TC2.0 reference manual is entitled "Streaming, Networking and the Internet. It's not exhaustive, of course (I expect there are books available that provide full coverage of the topic), but it does provide around 16 pages on these subjects and might be a good place to start. Along with experienced advice from these forums re: various services available, it might be all you need.

Hi, Jody.
don't forget that NewTek has a searchable FAQ database (http://newtek.com/faq/) In the search window on the right, type in 'Streaming' for some assistance.

Jody,
I use www.audiovideoweb.com
I push to them. It avoids lots of firewall and configeration problems.
The only gottcha I've encountered is getting the IT to put me off the lan, outside our firewall.
They have low rates, clear instructions and smart support.
There are some added functionalities that comes in handy.
http://www.audiovideoweb.com/chat.html
The chat screen allows agents to ask live questions during workshops and seminars.
If you're doing sports stuff you can have a scoreboard too.

We do too and I agree with all positive statements about them.

While many would never consider streaming to services like ustream.tv, mogulus or other services it amazes me that the tricaster does not internally support streaming to these services.
The only solution I have found so far is to send composite video to a A/D converter, into a separate laptop which really adds to the packout load. But with so many sites now supporting external RTMP (Real Time Messaging Protocol which is the multimedia and streaming protocol primarily used in Adobe Flash) you would think that the box could push that format.
When it does it will open up a whole new class of users.

I played around with Mogulus.com last night and REALLY LIKE IT. I just may want to go out of the tricaster into a separate laptop just to use it.

But the simple fact remains that we get huge viewer numbers in part because people are coming to these sites. While my use of a tricaster is for my personal brand and online show development I realize others need a standalone solution that is not tied to any of these communities.

With a little development work and customization, we have been able to use these type of CDNs. Contact me directly for more information. Sorry I can't spill the beans on a public forum.

Jef, I have tried to contact you offline to no avail - I have tried to contact you through your website to purchase items with no answer - I have tried to contact you through the private message feature on the newtek forums about streaming to mogulus right from the tricaster and I have received no reply?? Everytime i have tried to contact you directly I dont get a response - even when I wanted to purchase something... How do I get in touch with you?

Im completely with you on this one. Tri-caster would just have to somehow make the output act as a Webcam. Then problem solved. But compared to paying $40 a month, id rather use a free service, I really wish they would support these kinds of things.

This small program allows you to start the TriCaster in a special multi-tasking mode so that you can access other apps via the normal Alt-tab. without shutting down the TC interface. Run your favorite encoder or access UStream etc.Jeff, I apologize profusely if my question takes the wind out of your sales for this product -- after what I'm sure was a good amount of development time -- and hopefully this wasn't a top-secret key-combo anyway, but can you detail how this product differs from holding down [Shift] while clicking "Launch TriCaster" on the TC desktop (assuming there is already another window open)?

And sorry for this -- I kinda hate when people do this, but when something has been talked about in so many threads, it's possible that folks are just monitoring those threads for responses -- but I've detailed my experience publishing to Mogulus from TC here (http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?p=732723#post732723).

this is also the method I use to get around the alt+tabbing

My experience using Alt Tab has not been good. In that the when you either bring up the Mogulus or Ustream Flash window the system defnitley does not see a camera.
Now when I load Flash Media Encoder 2 it does not see a camera either so I am dead in the water. I have been using a Canopus ADVC-300 and I am not really happy with the end product.
Its pretty sad but a webcam on my pc is pushing better video than I can get out of the Canopus.. So I am in the market for a better A/D any suggestions.

I was trying to avoid general knowledge of the ---- key thing leaking out at NewTek's request. I actually created TC Launch so that it could be placed in the start menu for a particular application I had. I was only charging for it to cover the inevitable tech support. So don't sweat it.
NewTek recommends NOT running the TC in the multi-tasking mode and If you do I wouldn't expect much sympathy from NewTek if things don't work correctly. And now that this is in the open forum I wouldn't be surprised to find the feature removed in future TriCasters.

Way to go Steve!!
Had to ruin it for everyone know didn't you!!

Actually I never knew the multi task mode was suppose to be a secret. I don't even have a Tricaster but knew of it long ago from chatter here, so we (you, us) may be safe.

And now that this is in the open forum...Just FYI, this key combo was posted on these forums (by someone else) at least a year-and-a-half ago (http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62823). And several times since.

It wasn't a exactly a secret but NewTek is paranoid that an end user is going to screw up a production by running a bunch of stuff while attempting a live switch and blame the TriCaster publicly. NewTek wants to keep the TriCaster's reputation as being reliable.
