After a try with skin shading, i tried with a reference picture in hires to put this one on my Uvs and then modifying an existing mesh to fit with this new texture. It was at start just a test to apply a method Ray Sena was talking about on cgtalk. After some work under photoshop here's my result :

and the animation (not all the color map is finished yet)

Tell me what you think about skin shading. Modeling is not perfect yet.

Looks amazing to me. Do you have a reference to the cgtalk discussion?

Your work is absolutely perfect, but I wonder, why are his eyes so bloodshot ?
Is he high on something ? :D

STRIKE, you mentioned that you used UVs.
I have been stabbing at this technique for some time now and was wondering if you use the unwrap geometry method or the supplied LW tools.
Any insight on how I can make sense of this monster called UVs?

pauland : check from this page : http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63930&perpage=15&pagenumber=24
voovoo : hmmm yea i'll do it ;)
renatolazzaroni : have an "eye" on some african pictures and you'll understand some of them have those eyes.
dbolto : Well i use classic lightwave for that
here's the method :
Create a new UV map in map menu, with cylindrical in Y axis in automatic.
http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/uv01.jpg
then Unweld the mesh (CTRL-U)
Select polys of the right :

Move them left :

Deselect them, and move all in the middle :

Merge points to finish.
Then you have your first Uv map for a head.
After that i use the plugin named UVimaginator to export this one in an image to work under photoshop. With this one you can easily create hi resolution UV in different format : TGA, BMP, JPG, PSD, etc...
Some strange blotches on the whites of the eye?

1st off Thanx for the prompt reply STRIKE.
I have actulaly unwrapped in this method before, but the problem is ridding the uvmap of distortion.
How do you get rid of distortion?
Is there an easy fix or is it just a matter of tweaking polys for half a day?

Strike,
Absolutely wonderful as usual. The eyes are a bit strange for my taste, but great nonetheless.

Hi Strike
to make a UV-map for a head simply turn the head 90 degree,
then make cylindrical UV's. Turn head back. The map will look
like your last picture without the need to do extra steps.
Your pictures are great

Thanks ! :)
riki : right :) still working on it, but it was also a map test
dbolto : well i can just say that i'm moving some points to fit my texture in the better way, but i don't have specific troubles with distortion generally.
mega maniac : i'll take care about it thanks ! :)
robpauza : hey ! :) thanks ! I think the same for the eyes, there's something not fitting with the face, and i think geometry is the problem. I have to fix it. Cool to meet you here :)
Marcus : gosh ! thanks ! It will avoid me to change all the time my polys ! Great tip ! I Really appreciate !

Yes, I was aware of that but I was more wondering what prompted you to put inaesthetic facial features in a model. Features that are not systematic anyway. You say so yourself some... have those eyes.

Strike:
It's hard to say what the geometry problem might be by just looking at your image... possibly the cheekbones being a little sharp? There's maybe something a bit strange with the left edge of the mouth (where it meets the cheek) now that I look closely. Also, the chin looks possible a little flat from the front. He has some really thick eyelid skin too. :)
I still think it looks great as is though. I'm just being extremely picky.
I just re-visited your site last night. Awesome work. I especially like your lighting techniques. That's something I really struggle with. Nice to see you too.
