Are you trying to render out in to an image sequence or do you just want to capture a few specific frames?

If the .avi is just a renamed .vob - then you'll have to change the suffix to .m2v first. Then you should be able to handle it in Premier CS3 with ease.

If the .avi is a true .avi [converted / transcoded from a .vob / .m2v], then you need to find out which codec was used to encode it and make sure you have the same one installed.

You should have the option to 'export frame as' or some such wording under 'export' on the file menu.

Hope that helps.

If renaming to .m2v doesn't work, then going to .mpg will. If the audio is Dolby Digital, Premiere probably won't use it (though on the odd occasion it does).

If the audio is mpeg or PCM rather than Dolby Digital, it should be handled fine.

I bet a great place to find this out would be in the Adobe forums.
