Unusual shaped label on a bottle?

Any tips or tutes on putting a non-rectangular partial label on a bottle? Can this be done with UV maps? I can map a rectangle partially around the bottle with no problem, but when I try to use an alpha and an irregular shaped label, my glass looks different around the label than it does on the rest of the bottle.

Sorry, should've looked deeper in the forums. Someone suggested using a .psd file. That, in conjunction with a diffuse map and a transparency map gave me what I wanted.

Of course, if someone has a simpler way to do it without a diffuse and transparency map, that would be welcomed. :)

You could use actual geometry.
