May not be exactly useable in lw itself... but
BMRT is at http://www.cirkus.fr.st/CG/cg.html - Exluna no longer makes or supports it since it was made by breaking a copyright of Pixar's Renderman, from what I understand... but the link above still has the program, and as far as I know it's still legal to use...
For info on LW - you need to get the meshes to rib format... use plugins at
http://www.exluna.com/products/links.html
Most of the plugs look like they are not freebies... but I'm thinking the 3ds to rib may work... haven't tried it yet.

Do you mean you want to use a different render engine 'cause you don't think the LW one is good enough.
Or do you mean 'how can I get thousands of frames rendered without buying lots of copies of LW' because I can't get screamerner to work ?
There are several render controllers available which run LW's native lwsn render node a lot better than Lw seems to.
One of them - LightNet - is free and very stable and easy to set up and can run on any nework on any machine with enough grunt. And you dont need a single machine on the netework with a dongle.
