Hi,
We are evaluating Speededit for multiple work stations in our facility. I would like to find the best solution for importing DVD videodisks for editing. We only import uncopywrited footage and currently use Nero for all importing in the facility. I have heard Tmpgenc is recommended by many VT and SE users. But which version is best and is it fast enough for large high bitrate VOB/MP2 files that our producers require??? It's not unusual to have 2-4Gb files recorded at 6-10Mbps. Is it available in a multi license? Is it stable?
Cheers!

Why would you want this to be your work flow? You would be working with video that has already been compressed and then will be compressed again resulting in bad video...
That said I use No1 DVD Ripper http://www.dvdtox.com/ it's cheap and does a good job. But I really use this as a last resort... I will even remake a video if I have time vs. ripping it from a DVD.

Most of our footage comes off DV tape but there is also the need for DVD as we have over 60 producers using a wide range of formats and media. We are trying to standardize the workflow as there are still folks using outdated VHS.

Sometimes you can simply copy the .vob files from the DVD to your hard drive and rename the extension .mpg and it will work in Speed Edit. Sometimes it will not. I think there is probably a higher chance of this working with human made non-protected DVDs. If so, this would be your best solution. No conversion at all, ready to go immediately.
If that doesn't work sometimes you can take that new .mpg into any of the tmpgenc DVD mpeg2 creation programs and demux the audio and this will work.
Sometimes not.
For 100% success rate of non-copy protected sources, I use TMPGEnc 4.0 to rip DVDs. (http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te4xp.html)
It will rip any or all of the DVD to any of the Newtek Codecs for maximum compatibility. Or rip to DV. I do not think you will see a difference between the copy and the orignal.

tmpgenc 4 does not have problems with bitrate that high.
Check this page for the complete low down. (http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te4xp.html)
It's probably my most used program and also my most stable.
They do have volume license.
ONE CAVEAT::: and a deal breaker for many is that it requires internet authentication at first install and then randomly there after.
It asks to check license, you click yes and if onlline, it takes about 10-15 seconds.
If you answer No it will start once or twice more without the net reconnect but then it will need a connection.
For two of our VT systems that aren't online, I plug in a tiny wi-fi USB adaptor, hop online to the office wireless, verify license, unplug.

I like Cinematize 2 for the task of transcoding Mgeg2 to DV, It gives me excellent quality, and is fast.

Any riping program, that gives you full control of resolution and aspect, as well as video and audio bitrates is best. I had someone ask me the same thing in the 90's Brett, why would you want to edit compressed video? Well here we are 10 years latter, working in nothing but compressed! LOL
