I recently came across this short article thing on how to make these monkey tokens, and I need a few tips on texturing that the article didn't cover. (http://www.newtek.com/lightwave/tutorials/surface/SurfacingCoin/index.php
First, I'm guessing that you'd UV unwrap the coin and then export it to Photo Shop. I'm a little confused about what to do next. (I'm just messing around trying to see if I can recreate the coins.) If I have a picture of metal that I'd like to use for my color map, should I paint it just over the parts of the coin? I mean, does it matter if I go "outside the lines," so to speak?

My next question is, do I have to save my bump map and my color map in the same file? (I'm just checking, I believe they should be seperate?)

Thanks for the help, I'm new at this.

You dont necessarily have to UV unwrap anything. You could simply project each texture onto each side of the coin.

Ditto what SplineGod said. Three surfaces: Planar top and bottom, cylindrical for the edges.
