View Full Version : Does VT3 Have TC Burn feature?

Subject line says it all. I have an edit 6.0 system and output many approval copies before the master and they all have a TC burn. Edit also allows you to burn in duration time, source timecode and tape number! I did purchase VT2 and the free upgrade to VT3 so now that the wraps are off is this a feature? Is it a feature that we can expect in the near future?

No, this is not a feature of VT[3.0].
I also hope this will be added soon. Other NLEs such as EDIUS feature this ability now.
I hope I can get window dubs in 29.97 non-drop frame! This would correspond to the SMPTE format of choice in our shop...
Newtek should either make SMPTE formats selectable (as it is in several other professional NLE's) or decide on one consistent throughout the "studio in a box". E.g. Aura, I believe, is NDF, the VT editor timeline is DF, while I've heard that the spreadsheet editor in the NLE is NDF....
I'd like to see how well the EDL list import/export actually works in VT[3] given these incongruous timecode environments within VT, particularly the editor.

How are people working around this missing feature? I can see recording a shot of a timecode burn in abd then layering it into the approval copy but that amounts to a big file just for this simple option. You could use a mini dv file to geep the size down but if you needed a hour of TC burn it would still be a waste of HD space.

On the Newtek FTP site they have 2 AVI files for hour 1 & 2 which you can overlay.

BTW -- I *re-did* the two one hour long NTSC counter files last week, and Paul has them. No doubt he will will put them on the FTP site when he gets back from SIGGRAPH.
The two files really DON'T take up much space on the HD (roughly 125 gigs all told - the ZIPs are half that size). AND, they now show Drop Frame timecode (that's why I re-did them). Not as nice as a window dub implementation in sw, but they work like a charm. Once on the drive, you can use them by simply dropping a single content instance on the timeline - one click and drag operation, takes two seconds.
DF now? Cool!
Now all I need is NDF in VTEdit?

Why NDF?
Why NDF?
That's what our shop uses. All of our masters are in 29.97 NDF.
Most of our source videotapes from clients, cable networks and agency post houses are NDF.
It's a very common SMPTE format in a lot of shops. That's why all pro decks allow one to stripe/read in both DF and NDF. All professional NLE's allow the timeline to read in both DF and NDF.
Thanks for doing that overlay, Steve.

and thank YOU for the response :)

p.s. - since you use NDF, you may want to snag the original files then, before Paul deletes them. They're in the FTP Pub bin, about 60 megs per.

Steve,
Hmmmm
Think we should round that figure down to 125megs, instead?

I am new again to VT2 (3) from a long dry spell after Newtek killed off the Flyer. Where is that access to the FTP site on their web page? I was on it a few month ago to try and get a copy of bigfoot but I can't seem to find it again.
PS
What 29.97 NDF!!! 29.97 is always DF and non drop frame is 30. At least in NTSC land! Pal may be different.

Different ways to count the same thing....

Steve, thanks for the update
I had used your files a lot for clients in t2 and was an early reporter of the problems with your contributions of the 1 hr and 2 hr timecode overlay files in t3.
This is great news that we will have access to newly created compatible files.
For anyone who hasn't used them, well, try'em. IF you use t2, gettem now, t3, probably after paul is siggraphittied
I am especially jazzed to use them with the new toolshed 1/4 screen presets
oh yeah
thanks again steve for making, and dang nab the codec thingy you picked last time and it's unwillingness to play with t3 in the same way it did in t2

Codec issues? First I heard of this? I've used the older (NDF) ones without issue in both VT[2] and [3] under both Win2K and XP Pro. what problem did you have? The new ones don't differ much, although the resolution is slightly different (and I since thought of the idea of using a content instance instead of having to spend an extra 6 seconds or so setting the overlay up each time.)

Another alternative many folks could use is running through an old TC reader. They were the standard for window dubs at many facilities and I'm sure there are many still around or could be picked up for a song...
Secondly, last week we used a Digibeta (in E/E) for this purpose and it worked OK but the video was dropped down about 10 lines which I moved back up with a stand alone DVE (Dveous).
Lastly, Aura has a TC output filter that could be put to use... and even LW could put frame numbers on...
