Hi Wavers !

Thought i would post a weapon concept of mine. Its for a upcoming Half-Life 2 mod called Eternal Silence (Future / Space mod). I´m working as a concept artist on the team, this weapon is a Assault / Sniper rifle.

The model is a Highpoly one - just as a ref for the skinners and low poly modellers.

cheers,

Looks good, a bit like a conventional assult rifle.

It has a nice future look to it, but a sniper rifel should have an extra long barrel to increase accuracy. This particular weapon looks more like a close-quarters weapon of the C6 / C7 style. (M16 for americans)

somehow this reminds me of the weapon in splinter cell, a very robust and large rifle.

Nice!

It's a bit of a dream situation for the modellers to be handed this as concept art! Sheesh! Aren't you making it too easy for them?

;)

About the gun though, I agree that if it's a long-range weapon, put a long barrel on it. Also, the magazine of a weapon always slopes up towards the front (or curves forward) because bullets are tapered at the front (well, they can't be tapered at the back as they wouldn't be able to go into the chamber then!). So to get a more realistic look (albeit a more conventional one), slope the bottom of the magazine the other way.

Illustration of what I mean: see how the taper of the rounds causes the magazine to be curved/sloped forward

i know thats just a 3d model, but its of a real gun, i just cant find the site that was selling it.

It is a sniper but the barrel isnt huge, i dont know how accurate it is in real life!

Mega Maniac,

the layout of the rifle you've posted is "bull pup", in that the magazine is located behind the pistol grip. This means that the receiver is right up against the firer's shoulder, and the barrel starts way back, jut in front of that magazine. So, in fact there's a deceptively long barrel in that firearm, as it virtually runs the full length of the weapon.

For games it really comes down to what you're trying to achieve in terms of the feel, as to whether you bother with these considerations in the weapons. If the game is supposed to be hard-edged and realistic, then the weapons should "work". If it's a bit more cartoony (I keep thinking of the concept art for the Judge Dredd movie), then no big deal, just do whatever appeals to the eye. The test I would give it is "Can the player recognize this as the long-range rifle when they see it in play?", if the answer is "Yes", then it's a successful design.

Hope that helps,
Al.

Hi guys !

Wow this thread has turned into a big weapon discussion... cool !

Well I might aswell post another rifle, this time its a gas powered sniper rifle with "Bull pup" design as alunbjorksten pointed out..

it fires a high velocity arrowtype projectile.

here it goes....

And the movie about it (based on a true story) (bad joke, I know)

Looks good, It doesnt scream "Sniper Rifle!" whe nyou glance at it though, id extend the barrel ( its cliche but to a user, its all about making things intuitive and nearly all sniper weapons have long barrels ). And have a stand on the front ( but stood up ).

I like both of them (the first one better) but neither one of them feels like sniper rifles to me (but I'm no weapons expert- I forgot to go to S.E.A.L training), but rather more like a rifle that would be standard issue for your basic future marine.

Dete: I like the gas-powered flechette rifle design. If you wanted to make it scream "SNIPER RIFLE", I'd be putting a massive scope on it. It looks like you've got a laser spot there, good inside a dark room at 20 metres or less, but at sniper ranges (say 500m) how is the firer going to see the little red 5mm diameter dot?

Also, I think a bipod is a good idea (a la the Halo sniper rifle), to help keep it steady so that when you zoom in over the 500 metres to the target's head, you don't just see it wobbling all over the place!

Something else that a lot of sniper rifles have is an adjustable cheek pad to help the firer sight through the scope. It's like a raised block on the top and side of the butt.

hrgeiger: No SEAL training, but I did spend some time creeping around the hills in camouflague paint with an M-60 GPMG for the Australian Army! Highly recommended background experience for anyone into computer games .... ;)

The Bullpup is a kickass looking weapon. I'm wondering about the lower reciever on it, is that a grenade launcher? Not something that I would associate with a sniper weapon.

in reference to the Magazine sloping rearward, most sniper weapons have very small magazines. ranging from 3 to 5 rounds. Too many rounds will throw the ballance of the weapon of as the mag emptys.

One gimme that you may want to add for that quick `it's a sniper weapon' identification would be a scope of some sort, or perhaps a laser site.

Just a suggestion from a FPS fanatic. ;)

I believe the rifle that you are looking for is FN2000 from FN Herstal's. Their web site is

Hi again guys !

Thanks for all interesting suggestions and info. I´m currently working with some new concepts for u 2 crit..

How is this one for an assault rifle... pretty short (as colt commando) and many teeth for adding extra sights and grenade launchers, popcorn machine or such..

cheers,

I like the your design and the Sight Rail on top. But I would prefer the sling mount points to be on either side of the rifle rather than the top position as they are in your design. I assumed it might obscure the sight/visible laser pack if there's any, as well as causing problem when the butt stock is folded.

Take care
