So I just started modeling one of my many favorite cars the Audi TT. Here is the start!! Tell me what you think!!

Looks good so far, Julian. I modelled the TT myself once following a really good TVR tutorial from years ago. Cars aren't for the faint hearted :)

Are you using Extender?

Ya it looks like a hard car but where there are problems there is learning :). Yes but I use extender plus!

messing around with some materials last night for fun... far from done but just a start on the car paint and glass....

Model is looking pretty nice. Surfaces as you know needsmore work but that's going nice too :)

This looks great JB! Really nice work, especially for your first car! What method are you using for your modeling? Starting with splines? or just starting with subd?

Lewis- ya it was late at night and I just wanted to mess around with some surfacing... like you and I both said it need alot of work but it will get there :)

jeffrySG- thanks man! Ya I have been really liking this project so far! I actually have been using the build out method then I metaform the polys to make them more smooth. Probably not the most ideal way about going about it but I thought why not give it a try! It has worked so far :)

been really busy lately but I got some time to mess around with the metal shader on the car.... again some of the stuff isnt textured so bare with me... tell me what you think!

This RED paint looks better than last one (blue) but I'd rather finish modrling then test various paint colors on unfinished model :D :D.

Great modelling Julian. Well done so far!

Paint looks too shiny but you can work on that.
It's tempting to do test renders but I know what Lewis is getting at about finishing the modelling.

i would like to see the headlights. but as of now the paint job looks pretty realistic

Lewis- i know i know... i should finish the modeling of the car but I was so ANXIOUS to see it textured :) !! I will take your advice!

Iain- thanks man I appreciate it... ya i will tweak the surfacing some more once i get done with the modeling!

greeb1957- ya I will be modeling those soon... thanks

Hey Julian, that models looking good. Audi's are my favorite. Have you seen this thread regarding paint?

Havent really updated any modeling however I was messing with the surfacing and this is what I got... I just had too :) Its still got some work to do but its coming along!

Looking good, Julian!

Can you brighten up the reflector panels to get whiter highlights?

Looks awesome Julian!

Thanks Jeff- ya i can get brighter highlights i have just been trying out a bunch of different hdri images and lighting setups to try to get the best effect!

Jason- thanks man appreciate it!

heres an image I just put together last night before bed just for fun!

looking good. can you explain the build out method. i have only seen the spline method on a tutorial.

i am, at the moment, making my first non-tutorial car, and my wires look different to yours. yours are much more even across the whole car than mine are. i am using the spline patch method.

any input would be great.

thanks stevmjon

Ok for build out all I started out with was a box polygon on the hood of the car, then I used extender plus on the edges to form to the cars curves which you can get blueprints for front and side and all that. Now a car is made up of panels so all you have to do is start over with that method on each panel then make sure they line up with the other panels. If you want me to go more in depth send me a pm ... its late and im groggy so not sure if i am making much sense lol... hope that helped!

julian_boolean

that does make sense. i can visualise what you are doing. i assume it's a faster method to model. i have found that spline patching can be a little time consuming. i guess it comes down to personal preference.

keep up the good work. your model looks neat, and the reflections look cool...dammit! lol

thanks for your input stevmjon

p.s. could you share which hdri image you chose to use.

Hi stevmjon

neither way is faster if you know what to do wiht splines - it just looks faster sicne you need 30,40,50 minutes to make splines while in that time you make few parts with extender, but when you finish spline cage you can patch whole car shape in 5-10 minutes and then start cuttins/detialing :). I've used 3-4 different ways of Car making in LW and I like spline patching most since it's most precise way IMHO. If you don't have evenly spaced polygons/lines after spline patching then something isn't made properly on splines ?

thanks lewis

you must be pretty experienced to make splines that quickly. i've spent 4 weekends making my car and i am only 1/3 done on the body.
i am using translate plus a lot to move points around to fit in cuts/detail. i don't want to interfere with the original shape once a panel is patched. i thought this would save me time in the long run(no tweeking afterwards).

anyway, i might as well start my own WIP so people can see my slow progress, as i don't want to take the focus away from julian_booleon's good work.

thanks stevmjon

Yes I'm pretty much in splines/cars for last 8 years so you can call me experienced with splines - heck i even wrote tutorial about that :). I agree we should move this discussion to another thread. Let me know when you make your thread so i might help you with some tips and tricks.
