For no reason that I can think of my SpeedEdit crashes when I try to add media. This just started yesterday and I have no idea what is causing this problem. Any help out there?:help:

All media, including NewTek's sample clips? What about DV (via firewire) or MPeg2 or HDV (via firewire)?

Thanks for your help guys I found what the problem was this afternoon. Somehow I had some corrupt files in my documents that was causing the problem. So I deleted them and now SpeedEdit works fine. I don't now why this happened but who cares as long as it's working now.

They wouldn't have to be corrupt files, just files that are not appropriate for SpeedEdit, (there are thousands of file types out there). When you browse for a file in "Add Media" SE attempts to read not only the file names but also the entire length of every media file it finds in order to create it's animated preview and this can suck up all your memory and CPU usage. Sometimes, (rarely on a computer used only for SpeedEDIT but more so on computers that have a lot of software installed), when SE tries to read the directory, it finds files that confuse it and cause the crash.

For these reasons you want to have your "Media" files in a separate folder from your normal documents. In fact, if you have a lot of new media, you may want to create a separate project folder and move only the clips that you will be using in the project into that folder. This has several advantages, not the least of which is that it will speed up adding clips to your project.

You can also drag and drop into SE from a windows explorer window. Avoiding the SE scan of the directory all together. Storyboard works best for this as for they don't always drop on the timeline where you think they will.

That's a good point Jim.

You can also avoid the scan of the directory and caching by choosing "Details Only" for the display option in the SpeedEDIT file requester. This is my preferred method cause then I don't have to leave SE to open a file requester.

.mp4's caused crashing early on, but how many flavors of .mp4's are out there? Seperating into folders, AVI, Mpeg, QT, MP4's as suggested, then lets you find which folder is crashing. From there you move files until you find the one that is crashing.

It might crash, or might not, by looking in FileBin in the bottom window, instead of AddMedia. What may be a usable file, will appear as a ? that lets you know SE does not support it.
