I like him.
Did you model him in that expression or is it a morph?
Mmm looks good, keep going :)

it's looking great.. very stylized.. good job on correcting that jaw.. it doesn't draw so much attention anymore.. i love the neck mechanics/costume.. it's very clean.. and done nicely.. keep up the great work and keep us updated..

Worked on his "Bubble" and base. Frome here on out it's all mechanical modeling now. Zarathustra, I modeled that expression on him. I know, I know, I should have started out with a relaxed pose. I was just trying to get the look of the action figure I'm modeling from. But in all honesty, I think this is Mr.Freeze's relaxed face, and they get meaner from there :D And thanks Riki, I plan too:p

I'd soften his temple, its quite distracting at the moment - its not in a natural position so its stands out. Great model and expression otherwise. Keep it up. :)

very good expression !
great :)

Nice work... It has a good bold cartoony look. The expression is great. My only suggestion would be to work on the glass in the dome and the goggles... it looks too thin and you maybe could work on making it more realistic, perhaps intoducing refraction, though it will probably affect render times for animation...
Don Cassity
07-21-2003, 09:26 AM
Thanks bob.The dome looks thin to me too. The glass in the dome is around 3" thick. There is a outter dome and a inner dome. Was trying to make it appeare thick. Do you think the refraction settings would help? If so what is a good setting? Also will be asking more advice from everyone later when I get around to texturing him.

Hi Don, If the polys of the glass are single sided and facing away from the camera then they won't render... easy to forget. Also, set a refractive index of 1.5 and consider using an 'air' object in the dome for photorealism. Check refraction in the render controls. It will be cool to see what the model looks like when it's applied.
The only problem, as I say is that photorealistic refractive glass can slow down renders if you're animating. There are some tutorials you can pick up lots of ideas on, and I remember reading an excellent Dan Ablan chapter on glass in one of the New Riders series.

bobakabob. DOH! They are single sided. Will fix that. What kind of an air object? Any way, worked on the base of the dome today. Will post again when I get the rest of the base finished. Then it's on to the spider-like body.
Later. Don
p.s. Which one do you like better, the opaque or transparent goggles?
[hjd_uk]
07-22-2003, 02:21 AM
I like the one with opaque goggles - "de-humanises" him a bit more. An air object is another dome inside the 'outside' of the dome - basically a boolean object for light rays. So you have an outer shell and an inner shell for the dome. It makes the glass look like it has a thickness.
Don Cassity
07-22-2003, 06:55 PM
Ok, got the base done. And did the glass refraction thing. I set the refraction to 1.15 because at 1.52 his head looked like one of those freak show exhibits:eek: It does show the thikness of the glass, but I didn't expect all the reflection on the top of the dome. Still looks kinda cool though.

The opaque glasses are cool, but those reflections shouldn't be there... Weird... It looks like fragmented patches of polygons inside the dome are reflecting 100% as a mirror would... and even then the colours aren't right. Check that the glass surface applies to all the polys in the dome. Are the normals uniform?
Nice expression though!
The opaque glasses definately look better. You could try adding a tiny bit of transperancy.

riki, bob. Thanks I think I like the opaque glasses too. Bob, I'll check out thouse pollys. I turned the inside dome to no reflextion but I'll recheck.

Well I think I got it looking better now. What do you think?

I think it looks great. The opacity on the glasses really makes the character look cartoonish (seems a bit of a shame to wast those well-medelled eyes :( ). A lot of the time (although I don't see how this character could do this), characters seem really dramatic when they finally take the glasses off and reveal their eyes, but since he's in a dome..
Anyway, keep up with the updating, fantastic job so far.

still as good since last time I went by there…
2 comments though :
- opaque glasses are cool but I think you should also
update (if needed) the version with transparent ones
as in some scenes you could need them (mean : don't neglicate
the modeling/texturing of the eyes even if for the moment
you let him like this)
- some fresnel shader could help for the dome
and also I think you maybe should let this dome
for the moment and wait for the time you will have all
the face textured to completely finish the dome,
see what I mean ? depending on the final expression
of the face, its level of darkness or lightness in "neutral" conditions
you might think : "no finally this dome is too clean or too transparent,
or the relfexion is too strong and I can't see the face well enough etc."
I guess it really comes down to what sort of personality he has.

He always seemed pretty inscrutable. I like the opaque goggles best.
Very cool model and good design.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I have no intentions of neglecting the eyes just because they are behind goggles. Always like to keep my options open. And your right I think I will let the dome be for awhile untill I get the rest of him finished. Think I was falling into the "forest from the trees" symdrome. Anyway here is another update. Got the Spinal cap on him. And the base for the legs.

he's really symphatic Don :)
will we have the pleasure to see some little
quicktime or divx movie, just of this head
rotating around vertical axis (say while a light is
fading on progressively) just so have an impression
of him "alive" ???

Very nice , the glass looks better now. Cant add anything more to what the others have said but just one thing - id change the blue surface - at least temporarily - because we cant see the modelling very well at the moment. Looking good. I didnt know Mr Freeze was a cyborg.
Does this mean that he doesn't get a body?? How about hair??

Looking great, Don. How about doing some atmospheric test renders with the light source above or below?

Err. Ok let me see if I can answer these. Bob, keep in mind I'm still pretty new to 3D. This is only my 5th attemp at modeling & rendering. A failed head model. I should post that just for laughs. The female character I modeled from a Joan of arc tutorial. My wacky Super Hero, Ickis (still working on that one too) and now Mr. Freeze. So I'm not sure what you mean by "atmospheric test". If you could elaborate I'll sure give it a try:)
skb875.huh? And regards to wireframe. I can post one of the head for you. If I give you a wireframe with everything it will be very confusing.
webfox, I'm sure you know where I'm going with this character. I hope you enjoy the ride:D
riki, No this does not mean he will remain body-less. But he will remaine bald.
[hjd_uk], Sure I can change the blue surface if you wand to see the modeling. So with what I said at the top of this message, if you see anything amiss, please let me know. Also In Batman the animated series, Mr. Freeze is a cyborg. Only his head remains mostly human.

Looks good, did you do any concept drawings for this piece?
Don Cassity
07-27-2003, 10:30 PM
riki. I'm just eyeballing it from a toy I bought at Wal-Mart. I'm trying to see how close I can get without scanning anything in. There have been times I have to make things over. But I'm learning from the mistakes. Over the last 8 years I have done alot of illustrations for toy packages. Mostly for ToyBiz. So I have done alot of the Marvel Super Heros. I'm trying to break into the 3D market and have shown my Captain Amazing character done off of the Todd Grimes DVDs. And this Mr.Freeze character to ToyBiz. They really liked them and are wanting me to work with their R&D department on a new toy they are developing in-house. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hope things work out. I still have alot to learn. What a ride though:D Will need to figure out how to put textures on him soon. So I may be asking for some help here from time to time.

Very 'cool'. ;)
Looks great Don! Nice job. Will you be texturing the 'legs' or is that how they look on the toy?

ptaverner. My first concern is to make it look like the toy. After that I plan on seeing how far I can go with it in the texture department.

Ok, so this post comes a little late in the discussion, but I think the character looks better with semi-transparent goggles.
First of all, because it sets the character apart. When a you see a character wearing goggles or sunglasses they are ALWAYS opaque or mirrored. A coloured transparent glass is a welcome change.
Secondly, because you modelled the eyes and the eye expression really well, and they match perfectly his general expression. So they add something to the character. Hiding the eyes is a waste of good modelling.

Well I haven't gotten the bump maps on yet. But I did get the legs posed. Now remember, this is off of a toy. So the is only one joint per leg. Maybe at a later date I will go back and add more joints to him. In the mean time here is a turn-around.

I added some detail in the dome. Have a few bump maps I want to put on the face still. May have it by tomarrow.

Just a little update
Don Cassity
08-03-2003, 06:41 PM
Well I think I'm done with this fellow for now. The bump maps that I was going to use were for the dome and face. I couldn't get them to work right. So I opted to model the detail. It's not perfect, but it's alot less crappy than the maps I tried:D Anywho......thanks for the comments fom all of ya. Now I gotta figure out what to do next:p
